Forget RIBBONS...wear PAPER CLIPS!
What a great idea! I am watching a story on CNN wherein a high school gathered six million paper clips to illustrate just how many six million is. Six million as in six million Jews murdered by Hitler. But that is not the story...the story is why PAPER CLIPS.

Apparently, the Norwegians wore paper clips on their lapels during the war as a show of solidarity and a silent protest against the fascists/nazis. What a perfect symbol for us, too, since ribbons have been co-opted by the righties to the point of meaningless cliches.

I'm am sorry for not having all the details on this CNN report...it only caught my eye after it was half over. Maybe another DUer could expand upon it, but I think the paper clip campaign could be a stirring way to protest the rise of fascism in the United States.

Thoughts?

22. Awesome clip link!

Clips were mentioned on this website!
I did a search for Nazi clips and this is what I found!
See if it sounds familiar to our situation.

You must read the entire article and you will understand how and why clips should be our symbol.

Snip From the Learn Peace website....

Unwelcome change

On April 10, the day after the German invasion, the leader of Norway's Nazi party, Vidkun Quisling, declared himself to be prime minister. The announcement was received with such scorn and ridicule that within a few days Adolf Hitler sacked him, and introduced a German Nazi, Josef Terboven, as 'Reichskommissar'. The new commander immediately stripped the press of its freedom and banned listening to foreign broadcasts (particularly the BBC's).

At first the Norwegian army, with some British and French military backing, had given armed resistance to the invaders, but without result, and they surrendered on June 9. The King and government had escaped to Britain. It was time for other kinds of resistance.

Despite the risk of punishment, some people secretly listened to the foreign news and passed it on by word of mouth and in chain letters of encouragement. When all radios were confiscated (from September 1941), over 300 'underground' newspapers sprang up, carrying news obtained from concealed radios and urging no-co-operation with the Nazi authority. One person would type out several copies (say 20) of each edition, and pass them on for the next 20 readers to type more copies, and so on until there were enough to go round.

People thought up inventive ways to show their solidarity - for a time they wore paper-clips in their lapels or linked as bracelets; small coins, with the King's head brightly polished, were stuck on pins and also worn. To acknowledge the exiled King's birthday - and as far as the German authorities were concerned Norway no longer had a king - people wore 'flowers of loyalty' or the symbol 'H7' (for King Haakon VII). Several hundreds were arrested for this inoffensive act.

6. Subtlety is good...it will make people ask WHY?
No one needs to ask why your "I support our troops" ribbon means. And likely, seeing one person wearing a paper clip will not likely raise anyone's eyebrows. BUT...when people start seeing people all over town, all over the mall, at dinner, people of all walks wearing a simple PAPER CLIP on their lapel, they'll start asking "why?" That's when you tell 'em. I think subtle in good in this case. It will allow more people to get on board without wearing an in-your-face button or ribbon.

72. Operation Paperclip was the US taking in the Nazi brains into the US gov't
after WWII. So the Nazi intelligence officers were brought into the OSS and helped form the CIA. Nazi scientists were 'Paperclipped' into forming NASA.

Using paperclips to protest the current crop of fascists is perfect.

214. Make your own blue paperclip
Using a blue permanent marker like a Sharpie, color just the parts of the silver (or the colored rubberized coating) that are visible from the front. In other words, don't color the whole thing, because if you color the parts that come in contact with your clothes, it might eventually come off and stain. After you've colored the clip, give it sufficient drying time.

IMHO, though, the silver ones have more shine, and are more apt to catch the eye. ;)

FWIW, I wore my homemade black ribbon today, with my Dubya "Dude, Where's My Weapons?" T-shirt! :D

13. The yellow ribbon is meaningless now
Since Tony Orlando days...the yellow ribbon already means something. We are not talking about that message. The paper clip symbolizes resistance. The yellow ribbon symbolizes "support" and "remember," two things that have nothing to do with getting rid of Bush and the fascists.

28. I might be the only one who feels this way
...but I have always, ALWAYS, been out of step with that yellow ribbon crap. First of all, the story is about a CRIMINAL who has "done his time" and sends a letter home saying he will "soon be free"...I suppose you could stretch that like a rubber band and say that is military service, but I just don't read it that way. Ole Tony warbles "I'm really still in prison, and my love she holds the key, a simple yellow ribbon's what I need to set me free" or words to that effect. I read it like a bum who screwed up, went to jail, and if his best gal does not want him, he will "put the blame on me." While staying on the bus and forgetting about us, of course.

I know the whole idea came after the Iran hostage business, but it just never seemed RIGHT to me. The Tony Orlando song talks about a guy who SCREWED up, while the hostages were VICTIMS, captives, not criminals.

Also, yellow is the symbol of COWARDICE, as in "yellow streak a mile wide down his back."

I like blue triangles. It's an unambiguous statement, symbolizes oppression, and is rather "in yer face." It's like wearing a bumper sticker! I'd love it if some fashionista ran with it...they'd probably sell out.

My first choice would be a tiny tag that says RESIST!

Next one that says ..Ann Is A Man! LOL

Can we think of other Clip Tags?

48. Don't buy paper clips - go to your bank and ask for a bunch.
Banks are the world's depository for used paper clips. Some banks throw them all away, others recycle the regular but not the colored or plastic clips.

Kind of funny to start a movement with the help of the repug banks.

I'm wearing "the clip". People keep telling me I've got a paper clip on my lapel. If I don't know them I say "Oh wow, thanks, almost forgot about that and put it in my pocket". I think it will lose its special meaning if it is widely seen to be a protest.

In less than a minute and 7 Blue Clips, I have my bracelet!

The idea for the clip items just knocks me out.

The cost is next to nothing and it is so meaningful.

The clip bracelet is bound to attract attention and it's perfect for passing out a clip to those that express an interest in having one.

A CLIP bracelet will work beautifully along with a NOT ME bracelet too!

69. A kick, and another idea
I am now wearing a silver paper clip on my lapel. (I hope you're all willing to make us lowly silver clip wearing poor folks feel welcome, too, until we can lay hands on a blue one.)

I liked the idea of carrying a few spares around when someone says "I want one, too."

But, even though lapel clips and bracelets are great ideas, wouldn't they work as earrings, too? Attachments on all kinds of things, like key rings, bracelets, you might even be able to make a pretty attractive necklace pendant out of one.

I started wearing paperclips when I first found one laying on the floor of the Kerry campaign office here - mainly as a symbol of protest, in the style of the Norwegians, always innovative and brilliant; oh, whoops, Norwegian pride showing through, there. ;)

This is a great idea. It could be a very powerful thing if we spread it around enough.

93. Yes, the paper clip story about the Norwegians is true
> Apparently, the Norwegians wore paper clips on their lapels during the war as a show of solidarity and a silent protest against the fascists/nazis.

After being denied carrying the Norw. flag on our lapels during the nazi occupation, some ingenious brain got the idéa to use paper clips instead.
Subsequently, paper clip-wear were banned, and we resorted to pin needles.

Anything might do, as long as everyone agrees to using it! :-)

98. Have we decided what it will stand for?

IMO it should be a few words.
That's why "Support Our Troops" works.

I wore mine yesterday and received inquiring comments.

I found that I had to tailor my comments to the person.

The nice little girl at the vet asked. I didn't know how to tell her that it was to RESIST the Nazi Regime of GWB! :) I told her that there was wide spread voter fraud and I was protesting that, I felt that every vote should be counted.

She said she didn't know that her vote wasn't counted, so at least I educated her on that part.

When I gave my cousin his I said, "This is to RESIST Bush!!" Since he is as strong in that belief as I am, he asked for twenty clips! :)

I'm wondering because we really want it to be something that everyone will feel proud to wear.

Any thoughts

Not trying to be snarky, but we need unity of message. While I believe visible signs of opposition are important, they are NOT enough. Too many slogans and tokens will just dilute our message. What we really need is strong, charismatic leadership of our dissent, not just something else to buy.

On edit: I like the paper-clip idea. There is historic precident for the use of the paper-clip as a statement of protest.

I realize that you can get a p-c anywhere for free, my point is that we are getting too bogged down in the symbolism of our disgust. Ever since the election, there has been a truckload of "things you should wear to show you oppose Bush." All I am saying is that we need a singular symbol, like the paperclip, to keep the issue in the face of the population. Not to mention a singular symbol that we in the opposition could rally behind (i.e.: the peace symbol during Vietnam).

Anyway, the p-c idea is a really good one. I wish I could wear something that would kick the DNC in the pants and give us the leadership we deserve.

Help me if I am wrong but one thing that makes me sad is that people are just rolling over and planning for '06.

Where are the pins/t -shirts anything to show how upset we are, I have not seen anything on anybody.

In Yellow Pages ads and the like, where the Xians will often use the Jesus-freak fish. This would be a great way to express solidarity without being in-your-face about it. :D

126. How VERY Appropriate due to "Operation Paperclip"
Operation Paper clip:

After World War II the U.S. Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency (JIOA) carried out Operation Paper Clip to "recruit" German scientists for post-war military research. Wernher von Braun and his fellow rocket designers were relocated to the U. S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville, Alabama. Here they taught a team of U.S. Army personnel and General Electric engineers how to test, assemble, and launch V-2 ballistic missiles. This group developed the Redstone rocket. The U.S. Army provided Redstone missiles for the launching of the first U.S. satellite, the Explorer, and several of the first manned missions.

Wearing a paper clip would symbolize protest against US policies and businesses, particularly the Bush family, collaborating with the Nazis, Bin ladens, Iraq, Iran, Lybia, Panama, Contras etc...

I nominate the 13 stars and stripes flag as the symbol of resistance. We used it to fight George once before. This flag would allow us to show patriatism, or better still, support of the Constitution without being confused with the war mongers.

to one (misguided Republican) person I said who asked, I said, calmly, "it's a symbol of resistance."

To my (Democratic) roommate who noticed it when I got home, I tried to explain a little more fully: "The paper clip was a symbol of resistance to the Nazis during World War II..." but before I got to the second sentence was already receiving my high-five.

I will give out blue ones when I have time to buy some. Just silver-colored for now. :) Also I'm going to bookmark this thread so that when I'm feeling I can try changing my avatar...

147. So, does everyone have their paper clips?
Good! Now for more action. We need to drop a line to our favorite blogs and progressive sites and fill them in on this campaign. Daily Kos, BartCop, etc. We got two web sites to pick it up yesterday, with a long way to go obviously. But this campaign can be very effective, primarily because of the curiousity factor. People in the mall, wherever, will want to know why you're wearing a paper, then you get to tell them -- a symbol of solidarity against the fascist takeover of our government. We need to make America accept the F word, because it is real and it is happening!

158. This might be the transcript
I'm doing a little research before this stuff goes on my web site. This might be the transcript of the show you saw:

KAGAN: Now, why "Paper Clips" of all the things to collect?

FAB: Well, when the students in Whitwell began to study the Holocaust, of course they learned very quickly that Hitler had murdered six million Jews. And like anybody, like me, for sure, and you probably, when they first heard that, they reacted to the number six million as an unfathomable figure. And they couldn't visualize what that meant. And they really wanted to appreciate the enormity of the crime.

So the students are very resourceful and they instantly thought, well, maybe we could collect 6 million of something, in one place, and then we would understand how big a horror this was. Paper clips came about, because they did some research on the Internet, and they found out that the paper clip was invented in Norway, and that during the war, many Norwegians wore paper clips on their lapels as a sort of silent protest to what Hitler and the Nazis were doing. So paper clips became the perfect symbol and the perfect way to be able to visualize what had happened.

http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0411/30/lt.01.html

BTW, the project has been discontinued.

This article and story are true. The effort was so successful, however, that at last count, they had nearly 28 million paper clips and have thanked everybody for participating, but are asking that there be no new efforts at collections.

Did you read the story about the kids in TN collecting 6 million paper clips, one for each Jew killed in the holocaust?

A chain of 1200 or so paper clips would be about 100 feet long. Quite a statement.

218. I just started doing this at work(I love being an owner).
I have a poster that says:
Wear A Paperclip To Resist Fascism

http://www.ppu.org.uk/learn/infodocs/nvww2/ww2_nonviolence_norway1.html
During WW2, Norwegians wore paper clips as a symbol of resistance to occupation and fascism.

Fascism is returning , thanks to the Bush Administration. The plan to control Fallujan citizens is a clear example of fascism which we, as loyal Americans, must protest.

PROCESSING CENTERS? BADGES THAT MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES? DNA TESTING?? RETINA SCANS? FORCED LABOR??
Boston Globe
http://www.boston.com/news/world/articles/2004/12/05/returning_fallujans_will_face_clampdown/
Returning Fallujans will face clampdown
By Anne Barnard, Globe Staff | December 5, 2004

Under the plans, troops would funnel Fallujans to so-called citizen processing centers on the outskirts of the city to compile a database of their identities through DNA testing and retina scans. Residents would receive badges displaying their home addresses that they must wear at all times. Buses would ferry them into the city, where cars, the deadliest tool of suicide bombers, would be banned.
******************************************************************************

Then I made small slips of paper with a paperclip attached saying:

Wear A Paperclip To Resist Fascism

During WW2, Norwegians wore paper clips as a symbol of resistance to occupation and fascism.

do we have the biz card statement yet?

I tend to want to downplay the Nazi angle and go for a more generic "resistance" message IE

"The paper clip is a symbol of resistance first used in the 1930's (40's??) to show solidarity against unlawful war and oppression."

or something like that.......

195. Sorry
After 4 days of this, after 4 years of Bush, after thousands killed, I really can't get excited over wearing a paperclip. Blue or otherwise.

197. Okay, don't
This isn't about YOU getting excited, though. It is about letting the general public know that, contrary to what they are being force-fed by the MSM, there are many people who do not accept the Bush "mandate" and the advance of fascism.

Don't be sorry. But be something.

(You know what I can't get excited about? The number of newbies signing up and telling us how silly it is of us to demonstrate our anger.)

198. Go get 'em
First, it's doubtful the general public will have any reaction to you wearing a paper clip.

Second, you don't fight fascism with paperclips. Feel free to try, though.

Third, what Bush is doing is not fascism, but untrammelled capitalism.

Fourth, there is nothing new about me, not that it's relevant. If the best way you can express your anger is buying a paperclip, well, good luck.

201. CLIPS help to educate

If we thought the Media worked to get our message out we would not need a CLIP.

You are right, in a logical world, we should just be able to let our message be heard , but it is not!

The Clip is but one way to call attention at the fact that we are expressing SOLIDARITY with the ideals that we worked for during the election.

See Atman's new post that speaks more about SOLIDARITY.

202. I think it's best to SAY NOTHING and pique their curiosity.
DON'T tell them why you're wearing it. DON'T explain. If you have to say anything, say "Norway" and leave it at that. If they've got enough intellectual curiosity, they'll look it up themselves.

I think there's a lot to be said for the Power of Mystery.

203. We don't have time for mystery

we must let people hear something.

Why would anyone else want to wear something that has no meaning?

I would not.

204. It's not mystery. It's our secret way of indentifying one another...
...without identifying ourselves to others.

205. Deliberate cross post for a cause
I could easily just post a link to my own site. But I don't want to. I don't want this to appear to be some sort of commercial endeavor. Also, I cannot afford to pay for more bandwidth if this gets all over the place. I'm broke as it is. I posted this request for url's for the Solidarity Clip card, but no one has responded. I started it as a new thread because this one was already getting so unwieldy...check it out. I'm ready to post the card that some of you requested; it is all done, but I want to be able to put a couple educational links on it so people can get the full message about fasicsm and Norway without having to overwhelm the card with negative stuff. Please...

I need one fascism link and one Norway link new thread.

210. A great tool for spreading the Democratic message. Inclusive symbol
This does not need to be about a single issue. I like the idea that paperclip is an inclusive symbol.

green paperclip for fiscal responsibility.
pink paperclip for women’s rights
black paperclip for voter fraud
etc.
Blue for everything

Democratic issues can all be supported with pride.

Carry a few extra and hand them out. We must campaign in the off season too.
