He can make more money in the private sector now that he has name recognition (or notoriety, for that matter). He'll make $25k per speech for as many right-wing organizations as he can get in front of, and he'll make many multiples of his current salary.
That's a pretty common reason why people leave politics.
That's the scary part. Though I did read that Bush's comments for the other guy who resigned that day (whoever he was) were much more warm and glowing than his comments for Ashcroft. At least enough for the reporter to make note of it.
