'Big bo' rumor raises eyebrows
By Ellen Warren
Tribune senior correspondent
Published January 19, 2004, 12:41 PM CST

DES MOINES -- The buzz in political circles here is that one of the leading Democrats running for President --ok, it's John Kerry -- recently had some botox shots to perk up his kind of droopy, hound-dog look.

Not that botox is a bad thing.

Anyhow, this being the first time in my memory that botox usage has surfaced in a presidential contest, the topic seemed worthy of some in-depth investigative reporting.

What I've found out is that operatives working for John Kerry in Iowa are very quick to deny that their man had done anything to his face.

Is this what is really going on or are people speculating based upon the fact that Kerry is absent today?

1. I don't want to insult John Kerry but...
If he did have Botox injections, he should demand his money back.

"...the topic seemed worthy of some in-depth investigative reporting."

Must be because the rumor doesn't involve Gov Dean.

4. So what? Candidates whiten their teeth, stand on boxes to look taller
and do other things to improve their physical appearance.

If Dean goes on a diet to improve his dumpy appearance and lose one of his four chins, will you post something about that?

And another point: You have no way of knowing who has been botoxed in the past, or even in this election cycle.

This thread deserves to sink like an innocent witch.

That second picture of Dean is pretty sexy! Am I the only one who finds him attractive? And by the way, I'm still undecided. :-)

5. LOL!
Amusing, if true, but hardly newsworthy. BTW (an aside), I subscribe to the trib's site, and they won't fill your inbox with SPAM, or anything, so don't sweat the registration; what you get in quality journalism, albeit conservative, will be well worth it.

11. editorial is terrible
RW and dishonest.

Reading online is much preferable than taking chances with their crappy vending machines. If I get a paper for my money I feel like I've hit the jackpot.

I dislike the conservative slant of the editorial section, but for journalistic excellence and integrity, the Trib is top of the line! :)

I thought it was something much worse, like paralysis. I'm not a Kerry supporter, but if it's Botox and not what I thought I'm glad.

21. Actually, I thought it was a completely hilarious article
and it pretty much pokes funb at the rumor, which I think is the latter possibility (i.e., this is the result of rumors starting to try and explain away Kerry's lost voice).

29. Rumor may have something to do with his wife, who obviously botoxes
If you have seen any of her interviews, she is obviously a botoxer, so maybe this rumor is connected mistakenly to her. I saw Kerry on ABC yesterday, and if he got a treatment, he should get his money back

38. I saw her on C-Span this weekend and she didn't have the "Botox Look!
Her face was capable of expression and she looked very natural. Botox usually causes a bit of a "frozen" look in certain areas of the face. She had expressions and she's attractive and looked natural, but not "frozen."

37. My hubby said, Kerry looked very different recently. I said: haircut.
Now I know! We both thought he had looked very tired, thought it was his prostate surgery had gotten him down, maybe he had radiation aftewards and that could account for it.

But, botox makes sense. I don't think one way or the other about it really. Except for the "vanity" issue.
