MEMO to Candy Crowley: Green tea 'can block cancer'
"Green tea's ability to fight cancer is even more potent and varied than scientists suspected, research suggests.

Scientists already know that green tea contains anti-oxidants which may have a protective effect against cancer.

But now they have discovered that chemicals in the tea also shut down a key molecule which can play a significant role in the development of cancer...."

Now knock it off, you loutish excuse for a journalist. Please excuse Kerry's trying to look out for his health. I am not into fat jokes but just what were YOU ordering that morning? Shall we parse your breakfast order? Thank you.

6. Me too. I probably drink 4 - 8 cups a day.
I read an article a few years ago about all of it's benefits including allergies. I swear my allergies are 75% better since I started drinking green tea every day.

4. Look, not to defend Candy Crowley
but she was using an anecdote to illustrate how, in her observation, Kerry didn't seem to be able to connect with the "common people." Now, you may disagree with whether he was able to do that or not, but she was not mocking him for ordering green tea.

I know exactly what she was talking about. Years ago, I was a waiter in a mall restaurant here in Montana. Some yuppie couple stopped in and asked what kind of lettuce we had. Now, I'm familiar, and I was then, will all different kinds of lettuce but it was a JB's in the MALL, for chrissake! We have ICEBURG! I don't know what kind of place they were in where she gets this story from but if it was the kind of place that I worked, then I know EXACTLY how it would've come across. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT PEOPLE HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST GREEN TEA!

5. ALRIGHT ALREADY! EAT YOUR DAMN LETTUCE!
:) j/k

Now, remember that yesterday someone phoned the hotel where this breakfast took place and they do, indeed, serve green tea.

I understand your point, but it still doesn't give her license to "use an anecdote" to illustrate anything without explaining the whole circumstance. Does she explain to the audience that Kerry is a cancer patient and that maybe that entered into his beverage choice?

If he had ordered eggs that morning and specified only free-range chicken eggs and a Peeligrino, I would take her anecdote. As it stands it's a cheap shot.

According to a study I saw but cannot cite at present.

Crowley's typical of the press: they catch on to a theme, story line, image, and then view everything through that prism. Kerry's an elitist: he orders fancy exotic tea at a Holiday Inn: he's out of touch with the common voter. Heck, even Lipton's has green tea bags. (It's bloody awful IMO. I prefer Celestial Seasonings Jasmine Green Tea.)

It doesn't occur to the campaign press corps that they themselves may be out of touch with everyday folks. Some of the "elitist press" themselves likely go through the "heartland" acting like they're Nat. Geographic explorers observing the native fauna.

11. I definitely agree with this:

Watch for Candy Crowley's observations in Alexandra Pelosi's "Diary of a Political Tourist" (if you can sit through it). She's as completely out of touch as any politician. I do "get" what she was saying, however, but she's no more "one of us" than he is.

12. I understand what
CC meant too. But, I still think it was pretty inane, shallow, etc. etc. Not really the kind of analysis you would expect from someone in the position of "senior political correspondent." I think my 17 year old students could probably come up with a more sophisticated analysis (even if they only got their info from watching CNN) than "green tea."
