FRIST for Veep
Scuttlebut had the creep next-in-line for the White House run. Seems Cheney's ticker acting up (constricted aortic valve, say) gives the self-aggrandizing cat-killing skinflint HMO-cheating warmonger from Tennessee a leg up on the competition. What do you bet Cheney is saying between the breathing tubes, "Keep Frist out of my room!"

"Here Dicky, Dicky, Dicky, Dicky!"

3. VP or DHS Secretary
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 05:11 PM by 420inTN
Yesterday (or the day before), I heard that Tom Ridge was going to step down, and that Frist was the front-runner for the Dept. Homeland Security position. However, since he wants to run in '08, I'm not sure if he will take it.

On the bright side, If he does leave the Senate (for either the VP or DHS position), we have a Dem Governor in TN who will probably put a Dem in to replace Frist. From what I heard, Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. is the top name on that list. Frist had said that he wasn't running in '06, and Ford was thinking about stepping up from the House to the Senate in '06. However, Ford has a cushy House seat (he could be dead, and still be elected), and will face serious opposition from east and central TN.

Should the governor appoint Ford to replace Frist, that would help Ford in his '06 race.

5. Thanks for cheering me up!
The thought of another DEM Senator brightens my day.

Then, like revving the engine with the foot on the brake -- brake-torque -- the idea of VP Frist bums me out because it would give him a leg up on the DEM come 2008 -- provided of course the whole lot of them haven't been thrown in jail for treason and various high crimes, including election fraud.

Most importantly: A hearty welcome to DU, 420inTN!

BTW: Did ya hear about Ford attending Rev Moon's "Coronation," where Moon wore a crown and robes in Dirksen Senate Office Building function? I'm completely serious as this is too crazy to make up. Seems plenty of big wigs in government -- not all of whom are conservative nutjobs -- were on hand to make Rev Sun Myung Moon feel "special." He even had a shofar salute. Don't think HF's a Moonie, but it's important to consider as this is not a joke.

Rev. Moon's Curtain Call

By Bill Berkowitz, AlterNet
May 11, 2004

It's practically impossible to keep up with all the projects and conferences, rallies and summits, front groups and businesses, and political machinations involving the Rev. Moon's Unification Church – currently known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification. Having recently celebrated his 84th birthday, the Rev. Moon seems rejuvenated and desiring to increase his visibility, while at the same time this master of mixed and often convoluted messages appears to be preparing his final farewell to America. Along the way, however, he is trying to plant the seeds of his political legacy – with help from some powerful political friends.

SNIP...

Moon considers himself to be the True Father, the Messiah, and has stated numerous times that his goal, as Fred Clarkson put it in his book Eternal Hostility, is "an autocratic theocracy to rule the world."

On the evening of March 23, a group of the Rev. Moon's powerful political friends gathered at the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington. There, the Reverend presided over a ceremony presenting "Crown of Peace" awards to a number of honored guests. Seven U.S. Congressmen – Democrats Sen. Mark Dayton of Minnesota, Rep. Danny K. Davis of Illinois, Harold E Ford Jr. of Tennessee, Sanford D. Bishop Jr. of Georgia and Republicans Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett of Maryland, Christopher B. Cannon of Utah, and Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania – received "Ambassadors for Peace" awards.

The Rev. Moon, who was decked out in a campy floor-length cape, was presented with an ornate gold crown and a lifetime achievement award. Introduced by a shofar-blowing rabbi, the Rev. told the star-studded audience – made up of congressional members and a number of religious leaders – that a "new era" had come: "Open your hearts and receive the secrets that Heaven is disclosing in this age through me."

10. Thanks for the welcome.
I'm not too sure how many people here would like Ford. He's a moderate. Some would argue that he's a DINO. There's even some rumors that should Ford run for Frist's Senate seat in '06, that he could change parties.

If does stay a Dem, and gets into the Senate, I'd think that he would be a frontrunner for the VP ticket in '08 or '12 with a possible chance as the Prez ticket in '12 or '16. He's only 33 or 34 right now, has been in the House for 8 years or so, and will likely be the first African-American VP candidate. Kerry was supposedly very interested in Ford, but Ford didn't meet the Constitutional age requirements.

6. That's good news
if Frist goes, we get Ford in the Senate? Good trade, I think. Not sure how Frist can do any more harm at HS.

7. It won't be Frist...
Tennessee's governor, believe it or not, is a Democrat, Phil Bredesen. The Chimperor wouldn't want for him to choose a Democrat to replace Frist in the Senate, even for two years.

If there is a replacement, my money is on McCain. Even "some" Democrats like and respect him, which would put him in the catbird seat in 2008. And it would explain McCain's presence under the Chimp's arm the past two months or so.

8. Good point re monkeyboy. McCain's an excellent bet.
The guy's got the gravitas and he's certainly angry enough to sit at Smirko McCokespoon's right nostril, but the thing is, he's not crooked enough. The BFEE needs one of its own should, J Edgar Hoover forbid, anything happen to the still-unelected turd from Crawford. Few in the entire Congress are as depraved as Frist -- and that's saying something.

BTW: A hearty welcome to DU, zuzus petals or punkinhead. Both your names rock!

9. Agree with Frist at VP
If Cheney does leave for health (or death)reasons, I don't think that Frist will get the nod for the VP seat. It will more likely be McCain, or a (former) governor. It is still quite possible for Frist to get the DHS job, but I don't think that Bush will want to lose two Senate seats (does Arizona have a dem or repub governor?).

11. TN is an odd state
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 06:40 PM by 420inTN
It is controlled by the Dems (Gov and both houses of the State Legislature), but primarily sends Repubs to Washington. Go figure.
