Kucinich Draws Attention From Other Political Parties

By Colleen Heild
Journal Staff Writer
FARMINGTON— He'd order an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, create a Cabinet-level Department of Peace and pull the U.S. out of the World Trade Organization.Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich acknowledged here on Saturday that he's a different kind of politician, who may not be leading the pack of Democrats seeking the party's nomination for president.
"My intention is to make the Democrats a viable second party," Kucinich said. "And the reason why I can win this election is my ability to reach out to bring into the Democratic Party and to vote for a Democrat, the Greens, Natural Law Party members, Libertarians on issues of freedom and the Patriot Act, Reform Party members on trade."

Kucinich traveled to New Mexico two days before the Iowa caucuses on Monday to speak to Navajos and others at the 3rd annual Diné Bidziil Navajo Strength Coalition Conference. About 200 people were on hand.Norman Patrick Brown, a coalition leader, said a majority of the coalition's 24 Navajo grassroots organizations support Kucinich because of his vow to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq and his focus on peace. "Navajos have the highest percentage of any ethnic group in the military," Brown said. "We want our sons and daughters and fathers and mothers to come home. We support our Navajo warriors but it's difficult for any of us to support the war."
(snip)
Many northern New Mexico Greens support Kucinich and have switched their party affiliations— however briefly = to have a chance to vote for him Feb. 3

1. I was there...this was a fantastic meeting!
Lots of media present....and there were way more than the 200-150 people stated in the paper.

I got to know Norman Brown a bit working on this and have come to admire him very much. He shows such strength and determination to have his voice heard for his people and works on bringing them together in a good way .
If people knew what the uranium mine legacy is really all about....well, it is heartbreaking to drive through the rez and see these huge open mines and dead vegetation, and the way the many many who died from radiation poisoning and are still getting sick today are treated by our gov't ....will we never learn?

It was very touching when Norman Brown introduced Dennis....they had a beautiful prayer first in English then in Navajo by one of the elders. One of the Medicine men did a Dine blessing for Dennis. Dennis got a lot of applause and a standing ovation at the conclusion of his speech. His coming in person- taking time from his focus on Iowa really made a big difference.

Dennis did four states in one day...from NH to Tucson, AZ to CA and then to NM! My brain fogs over at the mere thought!

The Dine Bidziil is such an amazing group of people...and they can rock. The concert the night before went from 6 PM til after midnite! man there are some fantastic Native groups!!!

Norman- you are the heart of your people!
Thank you Dennis for showing the Navajo and all Indigenous people that you truly care!

2. I just heard from a friend there
that has only recently joined the DK supporters, and he says there was quite a bit of media coverage for this also.
He did not attend, but was only relaying to me the coverage.

perhaps they were only counting the media folk.... :)

It was hard to tell- the civics center auditorium seated over a thousand and they had figured there would be a lot more folks coming but the road conditions were horrible...black ice and a bit of blowing snow...no sun to melt it either.

But yeah, there was mega press! I am hoping my pics of DK came out...(damn shutter was sticking) if they are fit...will send 'em to nat'l and post them or a link to them.

It really was important for Dennis to connect there and I am glad he was able to get it scheduled. Kudos to the scheduler and all the others who worked so hard on this!! Was sorry we couldn't have mentioned it here on DU more ahead of time but thats campaign life!

Denis rocks!!!

Peace & hope

Really wanted to see Winona speak but had the long drive back to 'Zona so we had to leave before it was her turn to speak.

Peace & hope

5. Dennis of all candidates will draw 3rd party and the disenfranchised
No other candidate running has this ability. Kucinich truly offers a choice. Others may try with rhetoric, but fail with action and record.
