No one told me anything accept show up at 5:30 AM. The person training me will be a Republican grog licker. Wish I had a "How to be an election judge" manual. Or "election judging for idiots."

1. It certainly depends...
...on what state you are in. I can't believe no one told you what your duties and responsibilities are. I suggest you call your county's board of elections. Good luck.

4. Thanks guys, I found this "MO voters' bill of rights"
Just googled it. Wow! Other states with election law citations:

5. Well, of course there's lots of little rules and procedures

which depend on the state and county you're working in but some general advice:

(Some things are under the control of the person in charge, of course, but it doesn't hurt to have your own point of view.)

Keep calm and cool and don't let people or situations provoke or upset you. It doesn't help. Don't react to people who are stressed or angry in a like manner. Be very courteous and as helpful as you can and try and be steady and solicitous in voice and manner but don't be patronizing.

If they are out of control very firmly ask them to please leave and get control of their emotions (not 'themselves', depersonalize it a little bit) and return when they have. If they refuse or fail to so so, indicate you will have no choice except to call authorities to handle it. And then follow through if necessary.

Personally, eating very much makes me sleepy so I take little things I can snack on throughout the day like baby carrots, some chips, cookies, etc. etc. Whatever suits you and is compatible with your dietary requirements. Don't overdo the sugar as it tends to affect mental state somewhat. Also plenty of water and some juice (watch the sugar again) to keep hydrated.

Get up and walk around a little every so often when the crush subsides so you don't get stiff, have cramps, throw an embolism ...

Keep a friendly demeanor and try and have a sense of humor about things even when it's crazy. A good attitude can overcome the stress and can be infectious.

Be helpful to people having problems, particularly the disabled (there are also usually regulations about this) but also with people having problems coping with the waits, kids, etc. There are limits to what you can do, of course.

You're in for a long, but rewarding day. Get plenty of sleep.
