Most outrageous voting supression tactic I've heard of....
I was watching Democracy Now this morning and Amy Goodman had on a representative from the NAACP. He was there mainly to talk about how the government is going after them on their tax status, but the subject changed to voter intimidation/suppression. He said that in one state (South Carolina, I think), people are being told that if they can't vote on Tuesday, not to worry...they can vote any time through the end of the week! This goes along with people being told that they have to have their child support paid up, etc. etc. Another tactic he said will be common is the visible placement of law enforcement around polling places. He made a good point that to some people -- especially immigrants -- this is very frightening.

To what levels will they not stoop?

1. And what does that say
about a party who thinks the best way to win is to stop people from voting.

Do they not see that??

2. How about stopping people from filing lawsuits when they've been
disenfranchised?

There's no precedent for this. But it's not stopping Ashcroft's DOJ from trying. They're discriminating against people, and then trying to muzzle them from exercising the right to be protected from that discrimination.

3. I saw this on the Daily KOS...
And now the NAACP confirms it's a real suppression tactic and not just an anti-GOP myth.

Some how I'm unsurprised.

4. I've noticed law enforcement presence..
in early voting here in FL. Every time I go past my local library (4 times a day, usually), there is at least one squad car prominently parked in front of it.

Does anyone know if there is a legitimate reason for this? Are they there for "voters' protection"? Poll workers - any input on the question? I know that I never noticed the police at my former polling place because I was so surprised to see them at the library every day like this...

7. These days law enforcement might come in handy...
given that Reps and Dems both seem primed to beat the crap out of each other tomorrow

5. Those are oldies in the south
Fliers with the wrong date go out like clockwork in minority neighborhoods. There's a copy of one posted in the Alabama state forum.

The Republicans have been doing Jim Crow-type voter suppression for so long, they don't even have to coordinate it anymore. It's like breathing to them.

6. my scary scenario....
imagine if Rove can get the early voting thrown out because it is not specifically allowed in the Constitution. Rush, et. al., start bellowing about the slackers (?!) voting early and violating the Constitution (this from the man who said Bush would have won decisively had the minorities and women not voted). A literalist panel of judges at SCOTUS could rule early voting would require an admendment and set aside the votes cast rpior to the first Tues. in Nov. Maybe that's why they're all chill up in the WH.

8. I read about a letter being sent into black neighborhoods

in Pennsylvania. It said that due to heavy voter turnout, they were extending the voting through Wednesday. It suggested that Republicans should vote on Tuesday, and Democrats on Wednesday.

In my opinion, if they catch these folks, they ought to take away their right to vote permanently! They have forfeited that right.
