XXXXXX I usually leave politics out of our infrequent emails, but this time I cannot. You probably have heard tomorrow's election compared in importance to 1932. As a historian I am going to also compare it to 1800 What does the current administration have in common with the Presidency of John Adams? 1. Alien and Sedition Act of 1797, USPatriot Act. Both are meant to reduce your rights under the Bill of Rights. Both are meant to create the closets to a police state for the time and both are meant to support an Imperial Presidency. John Adams wanted to recreate an oligarchy and even a king, He behaved in ways that were insulting to the people of the time. Bush has said, "It would be easier if this was a dictatorship, as long as I were the Dictator." This kind of disdain from both was incredible 2. The Fourth Estate was cowed by John Adams by many a means. The son of Benjamin Franklin ran an opposing paper (and yes the papers of the time were partisan in ways that not even Fox News is today, but not by much ... they are fun to read though, and he was thrown in jail. Today we have a general cowing of the Press, to the point that there is no questioning of the policies from DC. Dan Rather told the Guardian over two years ago that the environment was such that he would have been necklaced if he questioned the President and the administration. And it is not only Rather. I know local reporters who are afraid of doing their job because they will be thrown in jail, or their careers will be for all intents and purposes over. Now here is what Adams could not do, mostly due to lack of technology. The current administration has used fear and mixed messages to carry out a shameless series of psychological warfare operations on us, the American people. It is imperative that George is not given four more years, for the sake of the Republic. Oh and this is the other part that they do not teach in US History any longer. The party that John Adams led, who did carry the abuses that Adams asked them for ... well they were replaced by the GOP many years later. I do think that the GOP is in for some surprises ... but that is my hope. Either the moderates retake the party, or they will go the way of the whigs, and that is the lesson of history. Anyhow this is not an argument made on the usual lines, such as a draft (which may have to come anyhow, because of how over extended the force is) ... this is a plea for the Republic. Tomorrow we need to vote George Bush out and it is for our sake, and the sake of the ideals that the Founding Fathers gave us. With no further, XXXXXXXXXXXX
