I know conservatives very well, though I do not consider myself one.

Speaking from the conservative perspective, which is the majority perspective in the US, I would have a real problem with Kerry. It's not like he purports to be a middle-of-the-road kind of guy. Rather, he comes across as a very real liberal. Bush*'s charge that Kerry is a liberal works, because it's true. I know he has moderated some of his rhetoric, but even his prinsipal ideals are liberal: gay tolerance, raise taxes on anyone, pro-choice, anti-death penalty, socialized medicine, etc.

So, let's say, as a conservative, I really don't like what Bush* is doing. If that's the case, I might consider tossing my vote to a moderate, or at least someone who comes across as a moderate.

BUT, not to a liberal.

I suggest Bush*'s approval numbers are truly list low.
I also suggest that a number of people who disapprove of Bush* will never vote for Kerry. The will hold their noses and vote for Bush*.

It's also been suggested that a number of people who disapprove of Bush* will hold their noses and vote for Kerry.

In any case, it seems a LOT of people will be holding their noses this Tuesday.

I fancy a whif of that air. A deep breath even. I'm betting it will remind me a lot of what change smells like.

1. I know what you mean
My dad hates bush and his war. He also is very conservative on social issues and believes if Kerry stacks the Supreme Court with liberal judges it will destroy the morality of this country. Whatever. I can't imagine thinking this way but to each his own.

2. Umm. the majority if Americans are NOT conservative..
..that's a myth. And Kerry's not that liberal. I know you don't intend to, but you're perpetuating right wing myths here.

3. I don't think so
The majority of Americans aren't conservatives, per se. Not as defined by this administration, anyway. In fact, I think the majority is most likely fiscally conservative and socially liberal. And this White House clearly is neither of those things. Kerry is not as liberal as the right is trying to make him out, which is why the "tax-a-chusetts liberal" label has failed. But there will be nose-holding on both sides. There always is. But there's plenty of us that will proudly and happily vote for Kerry. And not because he's our modern-day Jim Jones, as Bush seems to be to many of his cult. Thank God!

4. Well
The Repubs have the White House, the Senate, the House, the majority of the Governorships, and the majority of the state legislatures. I think an arguement could be made that the majority of Americans are conservative. Or at least extremely brand loyal.

6. Aha!
And there you've hit it. Brand loyal. Perfect description. That's exactly what it is. I know a friend who has tried desperately to woo his parents away from the GOP. He asked them a series of policy questions, and on every one, they agreed with Kerry, not Bush. But they are lifelong Republicans and cannot yet swap sides. Another four years of this bozo, though, and I think they'll desert. My friend said he, too, found it very hard the first time he didn't vote Repub, and he's only been voting in two elections at the time. But he'd been raised in an R family and it was hard to turn his back on that.

That's different than saying we are conservatives as a whole, though. As my friend told his parents, this is not the Republican party he grew up with. Or that they grew up with. Seriously, Nixon was a freakin' liberal (and honest to boot) next to this crew. America just has to wake up and realize that these neo-cons are ruining the GOP.

8. Good for progressives in the future
Consider that the young (those people under 30) in the most recent generations have generally been very conscious of the effects of branding (and probably represent a very different mindset than the boomers) I suspect strongly that in 10-15 years, the "brand loyalty" to either party will become much weaker. I believe this is in general better for progressives, since, as has been stated many times on this forum and elsewhere, Americans (especially baby boomers) generally believe in a Progressive agenda even when they vote for conservative politicians. As the electorate becomes more issue based, the GOP, the party of "style over substance" will collapse.

5. Full of holes
"Speaking from the conservative perspective, which is the majority perspective in the US, I would have a real problem with Kerry."

Your supposition that the conservative perspective is the majority perspective is wrong. Furthermore, the people who hold that perspective APPROVE of Bush. These people will not be holding their noses to vote for Bush, they'd be shoving them up his ass if they had the chance.

Maybe some confused morons will vote for Bush even though they dissaprove of the job he's doing, but even the moron vote isn't enough to overcome such a defecit.

7. Some of those conservatives who don't like Bush

will likely not vote, write-in someone, or vote Nader or Badnarik as a vote of protest.
