Clark blasts Bush for Pickerington appointment.
Wesley Clark Responds To Bush's Recess Appointment Of Charles Pickering
Manchester -- Wes Clark expressed outrage at President Bush's recess appointment of Charles Pickering to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Today President Bush appointed Charles Pickering, a strong opponent of civil rights, to the federal bench. Making this appointment, the day after visiting Martin Luther King's grave, is an affront to everything Dr. King stood for. George Bush should be ashamed."

"By appointing Charles Pickering to the court, the Bush administration is continuing its assault on our most fundamental civil rights. Judge Pickering has an unforgivably dismal record on important civil rights issues. Throughout his career, he has consistently put right-wing ideology above settled law. This is a man who has criticized the use of civil rights laws to fight discrimination. He has pushed an anti-civil rights, anti-voting rights and anti-choice agenda, and there's no reason to think he's going to stop now."

"Instead of providing leadership that will bring people together, President Bush has gone behind Congress' back, and against the recommendations of hundreds of civil rights organizations, to make this appointment. Once again, President Bush has shown his true colors - he is a pawn of right-wing ideologues who are determined to undermine our civil rights and roll back the progress we've made over the last forty years."

"This appointment is reckless, irresponsible, and wrong. As President, I will appoint judges who represent the values of freedom, equality, and inclusion, not the divisiveness of those like Judge Pickering."

1. Hard to argue with that!
He'll make a great candidate and an even greater president.

18. The reason they do that
People label him a repug, because they know there is nothing he can do in his campaign to refute that claim (whether or not it's true or false). No matter what he does or says, they can either say "See, that is blatantly repug" or "He's only saying that now that he's a Democratic candidate".

You can't argue against this logic. They have already taken all of his present actions off the board, and the only thing to discuss is whether his previous actions make him Dem or not.

It's the same as claiming somebody is in denial. No matter what they claim, they are in denial.

9. Hey - it's Friday
and as the previous post pointed out - just after a juicy photo op about MLK and also a speech to change our culture "one soul at a time."

What could anyone expect.

By the by - has anyone compiled a list of Friday announcements trying to slip under the radar of press notice?

I'd like to hear more of that kind of talk from our other candidates. Maybe they said it, and I didn't hear about it??

on edit:

I read John Kerry's comments also. They are both great!

8. revenge?
I wonder if this action was revenge for the warm welcome bush got at MLKs tomb yesterday. It would certainly be in character.

14. Not revenge - this was in the works for awhile
I think the MLK stunt was intended to soften this blow, to insulate the president, but it backfired. Today was the last day he could make this appointment before the recess ends, so he was stuck.

16. He's just the type of person to do that.
He's vengeful. I would not doubt for a second, that that is exactly what he was doing by appointing Pickering. I didn't even think of that! Good point!

17. Lots of things, but not revenge for yesterday
Recess appointments can't be done on a day's notice. This has been planned for awhile.

10. Charge, General!
You are really landing some great points! I hope that all liberals, black and white, are roused by your righteous anger and get out there and register voters and make sure they vote Democratic in November!

11. Wow! Great response!
I hope everyone who reports on this notices the juxtaposition between his visit to MLK's grave and the appointment of Pickering, the very next day.

I am not necessarily a Clark supporter, but way to go, General!

13. Hear! Hear! Wes Clark!
That was an awesome statement! George Bush is, without a doubt, the most despicable president we have ever had! I cannot wait until Clark kicks his ass back to Crawford. I've had just about as much as I can stomach from this administration. :grr:

19. Wasn't it just last year on MLK's b'day
that he challenged the university of Michigan's affirmative action policy?

It's such a clear message to his racist base. He has to lay a wreath on mlk's tomb stone but then let the republican racists know that that was just for show, pickering is for them, and they know it.

20. Excellent
So far I've seen threads on Clark, Kerry and Edwards making a statement on this... I've only gone through page 3 of the forum, but that's all I've found so far. Did any of the other candidates comment?

24. I hope all the candidates
take bush to task over this, the man is this countries worse enemy. I cannot believe bush had the audacity to show up at Martin Luther King's grave the day before, knowing he was going to appoint this bastard to the court.

I am livid, the only thing I can say w/out being arrested is: I have never despised anyone as much as I do bush.

Thank You General Clark.

And then there were none!
