18. Bear, I wondered where you were
I canvassed with John's friend from Ireland today. What a beautiful man to come here for 2 weeks and do nothing but volunteer for Kerry every single day! He said he was so angry about what happened here last time he just had to come and help!

Broward is teeming with people like him right now. Can't you just feel the energy? They are coming from all over and bringing enthusiasm like I have never seen. Michael Moore's speech Thurs. nite sent the people who were there into a frenzy - just like the paper said.

Feeling real good about us down here right now - at least til BBV rears its ugly head. Hoping and thinking we have the numbers to make that a non-issue this time!

55. Hi there!
D the Irish guy is awesome isn't he? Can you believe he came here to help us save our Democracy? I can really feel the energy. Feeling good, but getting tired of the Freepers out at the library. They've been quite rabid. They've been saying things like you all are baby killers, socialists, communists, etc. Makes me sick, quite frankly. We will be there again Sunday and Monday and canvassing on Tuesday. Hope to see you soon! P

5. Chased Absentee Ballots
Here in Orange County, Florida.

I went around to people in my precinct who had an absentee ballot mailed to them but not returned to remind them about it and let them know about their options.

Not too much more, it is my husband and my 10th wedding anniversary. He asked what I wanted for it and I told him a new house, and a new Senate....

44. i was just telling folks to get their absentee ballots in most of the week
and today telling them to drop them at any polling place in the county in Tuesday.

I am calling Dems, so they had either already done it or were grateful for the info

all very positive, since i am calling dems only, lots of "Do you think we can win?" type questions so i give them some talking points to take to work or church with them ala

"Zogby says the Independants are 2-1 for Kerry, which will put us over the top" or...

"That Bin Laden tape just shows how Bush didn't do his job, AGAIN" or..

"The lack of flu shots is just criminal isn't it?" (the seniors are really pissed about this one)

7. I shook his hand and called him "Mr. President!"
Rally in Appleton, WI, early this morning. My voice is tired from screaming, but I feel great!!!

Drove through Green Bay on the way home, drove past shrubby's rally, and resisted the urge to puke.

Stopped at Kerry HQ in GB - very, very busy. Gave them about 50 pins to distribute, and picked up a few more signs.

To be distributed in the morning. Signed up to call absentee voters to inform them that they can bring their ballot to the polls Tuesday if they forgot to mail it. By the way...many of my friends left California to work in New Mexico and Nevada! Its lonely but hopefully they are doing some good.

My wife and I took a team of students and walked 25 blocks across two districts during a massive GOTV campaign.

The first house my wife knocked on had two skin-heads come to the door and say they are voting for Bush..(don't worry, were not courting the Nazi vote..:)

Undeterred we had GREAT feedback and our area is solidly for Kerry..

It was hard work and we are doing it again tomorrow..

On the way between Kearney, NE and here a steel hook came off a semi and put a hole through my windshield. 5 hours later and a change of pants later :scared: I was back out on the road.

After about 3 hrs sleep, I got up and set to work. Today was a blast. One lady told me about her and her neighbor, with nobody else's guidance or prompting had registered 78 PEOPLE to vote in their apartment building ALONE. On Tuesday they will be giving those people rides. Nobody asked them to do this, they just did.

61. Stood on a corner in Philadelphia
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 08:15 PM by GoneOffShore
with about 10 other people with Kerry/Edwards signs - others were holding up 'Honk 4 Kerry' signs. The interesection, 18th & Walnut, is deep in the wealthiest part of center city Philadelphia. And yes, there were some thumbs down from some people in Jaguars and suv's, but the majority of people were honking their horn, waving, smiling.
Best part of the experience was the cab driver who pulled, with a fare in the back and said, "Hey, I'm a Republican committee man in Delaware County, but I'm working for Kerry. He's going to win." He then smiled, honked his horn some more and drove off.
There was also the woman who had been working another corner, walking down the street shouting, "Remember to vote. Democrats vote on November 2, Republicans vote on November 3!" There were a lot of smiles and laughs on that one.
This was a great antidote to Mrs. GoneOffShore's trip to Lancaster county yesterday, and all the hand lettered * signs, praising shrub as if he sits on the right hand of the great golden retriever.

(I could only be there for about 30 minutes regrettably because we were chauffering around friends from England and today was their last day. They went to the Kerry/Clinton rally and had a wonderful time - Both wore Kerry buttons and cheered with the crowd)
added on edit - ]
And the message on our answering machine is, "Sorry we can't take your call right now, but we're out campaigning for John Kerry. Please leave a message."

Calling Kerry voters and reminding them where their polling places are and to get out and vote. Less grouchy people, but still pretty hard--it'll be worth it on Tuesday, though! :-)

66. Drove voters to the polls
I've been doing this all week. The areas I'm picking them up from are suffering from the most heartbreaking poverty. :-(

Today I was driving a woman with her two children. All three only spoke spanish, but one of the things I did understand was a little made up song that her youngest son was singing in the back seat; "Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry, Kerry...NO BOOSH!" It was so cute! His mom and I couldn't help but laugh every time he started up. :-)

Have you talked to family or friends lately? Perhaps you can win some new votes for Kerry or make sure that everyone gets to the polls on Tuesday.

Money helps, but now's the time to hit the streets.

91. Canvasing and phone banking in Iowa all afternoon. Committed to
canvasing on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday too.

We had a great day. Iowa Dems very committed to bringing home the Kerry vote. We have a plan and are going to work that plan. The number of volunteers showing up are phenomenal. At least 10 times what people expected.

Met an ex-Marine today who said "We need to get that bastard out of the White House." Made my afternoon. I canvased with two high school kids just turned 18. They have lots of classmates who are voting too. Looks like we can turn the tide here in Iowa.

My wife was on the phone bank all afternoon and talked to a woman who said she was a Dem voting for Kerry and her husband, who was a republican, was also voting for Kerry.

Walking is not difficult, just discouraging sometimes, but then you meet or talk to someone who makes it worthwhile.

Volunteer as much time as you can to GOTV. You can sleep or catch up on work Wednsday. That's what will win this thing and make Wednesday morning a bright sunny day.

Tomorrow and Monday I will be calling and on Tues I am an Ohio Poll Challenger (Before anyone corrects me this is what we are called in Ohio!)Ohio will be blue!!!!! We had good news that Bush will be in Wilmington on Monday, we must have made quite a dent around here for him to come here the day before the election- these people came in droves to vote for him in 2000.

111. I converted a potential Bush voter
We were talking the election at lunchtime today. Our plumbing guy and his wife are both freepers and they were all "now on Tuesday, you're going to vote for Bush, right?" I, of course, replied that I will vote for Bush...to go right back to Crawford and wait for the federal marshals to come pick him up. "Bush my ass, I already voted for John Kerry." All of a sudden, about four people volunteered that they too had voted for Kerry--it seems that once you serve as an icebreaker, people will start talking about Kerry. They like him a lot at least at my store. One of my hardware guys (not computer hardware, real hardware like bolts and doorknobs) started talking Osama-Bush and Saddam-Bush links. I asked him where he got it..."oh, from this little website you probably never heard of called bartcop-dot-com."

And while we're discussing Bush and his links to most of the terrorists in the world, my window guy entered with "I could never vote for a man who would take my guns away." I'm scratching my head...Badnarik? Who's running on the American Nazi Party ticket? Rocky Suhayda, I think, and even he may be against gun confiscation. "No, Kerry! Kerry hates guns!" Uhh...Geoff, I think Kerry likes guns a lot. "Why do you think that?" Because Kerry's a hunter, and a good one. Next thing you know, he's asking all these questions about specific Kerry policies. He heard what he liked; he wasn't crazy about Bush but didn't want to risk his gun collection. Now that he's confident his guns won't be collected by the government, he's a Kerry man.

Worked 12 hours today but managed to post 1 inch diameter 'anti-bush' stickers on some computer monitors at work.

Printed fun '*-trashing' lawn signs to set out to replace others I already have had at roadside for the last six weeks. These are stopping traffic daily, since I change them every day or two and have six out with K/E signs.

For MoveOn.org called for three hours (yesterday) undecided voters in NH from ME to get them out to vote for K/E.

Called for 1-1/2 hours at K/E office (yesterday) to get out undecided voters to vote for K/E then for another 1-1/2 hours folded flyers for door stuffing this weekend and for flushers getting out at 4AM on Nov2.

Recharged my batteries by cruising the DU.

I don't belong to a union but they invited Vets for Kerry to join in the GOTV effort. It's different than the straight door to door in heavily democratic areas.

This is selective 'visits' to the homes union members
who are spread all over the county in suburbs where the signage suggests the race is hotly contested.

I've heard a lot about the sign warfare here at DU. Nothing like that happens in my solidly Kerry neighborhood but today I was embedded with the union at the frontlines.

I've been working the early-voting places this week, and I voted Thursday, but today I just went out to a street festival and handed out Kerry stickers. Gonna work the polls again on Tuesday, all day.

126. Prepared for tomorrow
We are having a "phone bank" party tomorrow afternoon at our house. We'll have 6 or 7 people using their weekend cell phone minutes to call Dem voters in Ohio to remind them to vote on Tuesday.

(We are stuck deep in the heart of Texas, though we have also done phone banking locally earlier this week.)

We got 700 names (100 per caller) via ACT (America Coming Together) and Party for America.

Anyone else who wants to call Ohio voters, go to this link to sign up for a list of voters to call: http://www.partyforamerica.org/phone/

So today I arranged to get the list of voters for all our guests to call, organized them and the various scripts we are supposed to use, and helped my SO clean the house and prepare food for our guests.

After completing our calls tomorrow, we will be completing the festivities by watching "Outfoxed".

:-)

How about you?

I suspect you may be on the ground in Ohio in person. Is that right?

129. Put a "Young Voters for Kerry-Edwards" button on the kids' Halloween
buckets. Sent list to today's shift worker for GOTV phone banking - then went and picked it up when she was done.

Yesterday, me and my daughter called 282 voters for the GOTV phone banking effort here in our town.

One of those we called returned my call this morning and asked for the # to call to make sure her registration was okay. So, I looked it up for her.

Also, another one I called turned out to be on a committee and he called me back today to see if I would work the polls on Tuesday. He said he had to make sure I could since I haven't gone to the training. He hasn't called me back yet.

133. GOTV canvas
We had a canvas scheduled for 9:30 this morning at Kerry HQ in Kansas City.

The place was absolutely *jammed* with people. Old, young, couples, people with kids, and lots of great union folks.

We walked the streets all day with GOTV literature - rides to the polls, voting hours, etc. Spoke with loads of highly motivated Democratic voters. Missourians are looking to 1-elect a great new president, and 2-avenge the atrocity of 2000.

We're out again all day tomorrow, then doing visibility events on Monday, then poll watching on Tuesday. Wake to a redeemed country on Wednesday.

134. Uh, took a break from
15 hours a week of phone-banking at our combined local Congressman/Kerry office. Monday was a visibility thing on the corner of Rte. 7 (got weirdly hassled by a Sheriff's Deputy--he was courteous to me, but by the time he got to the end of our line, he'd provoked a cell-phone call from the ubiquitous lawyer among us). Tuesday dragged ass out of bed way early to do 'Breakfast Rally' with Congressional candidate/Lt. Governor. Dropped lawn signs off at neighbour's house on way home. Made phone calls to confirm source of rides for GOTV calls. Made phone call to confirm time/location of voting absentee voter in person for an old guy who said his emphysema would prevent him waiting in long lines.
Gave away my last two Kerry buttons at the restaurant I was eating in last night. Oh! I know--I carved a jack-o-lantern today--downloaded a lovely pattern of Bush's face, then added fangs and horns.
Didn't do Cheney, didn't want to give the kiddies real nightmares....

137. Hit my last 30 houses on the list, plus delivered signs and dealt with
headaches we are having with "Early Voting." Got two more volunteers for poll watch...(we were short of them) and then took a break tonight and posted alot on DU.

Needed a break...all week canvassing and the rest...

138. Spent the day canvassing "low efficacy" voters to GOTV
If there's a registered Democrat anywhere in Arizona who hasn't been contacted by phone or in person at least twice, I'll be surprised.

Two more surprises:

1. The low-e voters are voting this time.

2. A tour of my marginally-GOP area revealed a large number of KE signs, bumper stickers and so forth -- and just one house with a Chimp sign. They had one in each of three windows, so I imagine they're trying to make up for the lack of enthusiasm among their neighbors.

My prediction: Arizona goes blue Nov. 2!!!!!!!!!!!!

139. Talked about the election with health care workers
at the local hospital outpatient clinic while sitting in my suitably-bumperstickered wheelchair.

Unfortunately my body objects to anything more at the moment. I shouldn't even be sitting up at a computer right now, what with a recurrence of cellulitis in my right leg, but I need my talking points for my weekly phone call with my mother. She's a lifelong Democrat who hates Bush, but is a bit wobbly about Kerry due to the efforts of some freepish friends and relatives. I've taken it upon myself to reinforce her natural inclination on the phone every Sunday.

I wish I could do more. I just can't :(

and helped at a rally for Claire McCaskill who is running for Governor. I figure the people who come and vote for Claire will also vote for Kerry, and vice versa..so I'm going to count the Claire rally as helping Kerry!

143. You guys are amazing!!
Impressive! Fantastic!

I didn't do much in comparison. Tried to convert 2 *istas via email who were saying that Christians should go and vote their consciences. I asked would Christ do this and so forth...

Studied my Poll Worker information, since Tuesday I'll be a Dem Poll Watcher and I've never done this before. I'll also be doing the Closing Voter work for Common Cause/VoteWatch (http://www.votewatch.us/).

Then went to neighborhood family day wearing my Kerry button. Live in a primarily Black neighborhood, but the whites in this neighborhood are * lovers and some of the Blacks are not happy with Dems (it's GA).

146. Voted and then canvassed all day
I also picked up some yard signs to put up at some of the major intersections. I knocked on about 150 doors for the GOTV campaign for the DFL here in MN. VERY heavy Kerry support. In one neighborhood, I knocked on about 60 doors and every single one was a die-hard Kerry fan. Out of about 200 or so in that neighborhood that my group did, there were maybe 5 * supporters. We're knocking on every door, not just those of known supporters, so it was great to find that level of support. I'm leaving soon to go out and canvas again today.

visiting registered Dems, going door to door to remind them to vote on Tuesday. People are pumped and this was in a neighborhood full of mostly politically uninvolved people.
