Drove down to Florida and back during the last two weeks (Columbus OH to Naples FL and several stops in between), and kept count of the bumper stickers I saw. This isn't a scientific poll, of course, since I undoubtedly missed a bunch of them while paying attention to other things, but here's my total:
Bush: 42 Kerry: 42 (including my own)
For what it's worth.
I was surprised by several things: first, that I didn't see more bumper stickers than I did, for both sides. They were few and far between for such a long drive. I wondered whether all those cars without stickers just didn't care, were all apathetic and uninvolved citizens, or just didn't want to mess up their pristine cars. (Easy solution to the latter - tape the sticker to the inside of your back window. No one will steal it that way, either.)
Second, I was surprised (horrified is more like it) to see a sticker ratio of 2:1 in favor of Bush at the dog show I attended. I'm always flabbergasted to see animal people who are rabid Republicans. To my mind, the two should be mutually exclusive. My Kerry sticker(s) were the only ones at the show, that I saw. Again, not a scientific poll, because I didn't wander about the parking lots looking for stickers - just counted the ones I happened to come upon. But in my experience, a lot of animal people (domestic or exotic) are inexplicably Republican. What part of the brain went missing there??
Another observation: I didn't keep count of yard signs, but remained aware of them in a general sense. Lots of Bush signs in some sections of Florida - but lots and lots and lots of Kerry signs on the islands, Sanibel and Captiva, and nary a one Bush sign. Made sense to me. People living on an island are aware that we have limited resources in the world, that we can't just dump our garbage anywhere, that we have to live in harmony with ecology, not run roughshod over the natural world. If you're on an island, with limited space and limited resources, you'd better be ecologically aware!
Disappointing observation: Fairborn Ohio has a huge preponderance of Bush yard signs, though there's a healthy number of Kerry signs as well. Fairborn is right next to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Again, I'm puzzled over the tendency of the military to support Republicans. Talk about voting against your own best interests....
But a final encouraging note: on my last leg of the drive up to Columbus, my bumper sticker count was 41 Kerry to 42 Bush. I wasn't thrilled. Asked the universe for a sign that things would turn out alright. No sooner had I voiced the thought, than a car passed me, plastered with Kerry and Democratic stickers. :)
(And btw, my dog won nicely at the show.... :) )
