30. Actually, to be perfectly honest, he did
Last year he loaned his campaign something like $6 million to keep it going until he could do well in the primaries and start collecting serious donations. They mortgaged one of their houses, I think.

Not a criticism. Just trying to tell the truth.

48. Snopes...
The aggregate value of these five homes is roughly $29 million, but the claim that John Kerry "owns" all of these properties is problematic. John and Teresa Kerry signed a prenuptial agreement and have kept their premarital assets separate. The Boston townhouse (which John Kerry mortgaged in 2003 to finance his presidential bid) is the only one of these homes that they own as a couple; the other four belonged to Teresa before her 1995 marriage to John Kerry, and some of them are even still listed under the name of her late husband.
It's at www.snopes.com

Clark blogger quoted here-

The set up on Maher is simple...

Belzer represents our anger; Clark represents our reason; Costner represents the idiots who just know any better; and Coulter represents all the fascists pigs that have infected this earth with their filth, shit, bigotry, hatred and evilness.

35. Not a bad show
Belzer freakin' rocked, and is one of the funniest human beings on the planet.

Wes made some great points, especially about the media, but he was a bit stiffer than usual.

And yes, Costner made some sense on a few things, but became incoherent. And how does a self-described 'conservative' who isn't voting donate so much money to Dems, including maxing out for Kerry?

http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?st=CA&last=Costner&first=Kevin

Stan C. is a facist party doll, and a stupid one at that. And he looks like a horse and talks like a drag queen.

Bill's 'wolf' speech was hilarious! Loved the dig at Gale Norton.

So, my take? Wes needs to loosen up and be his witty self. Costner needs to quit drinking, and Belzer should be on more often. And Stan needs to just shut the fuck up and go away.

Costner made some good points. I think he basically encapsulated the mentality of those who are apathetic about voting, and with good reason. It's realistic to say that the Democrats have strayed from their core values to pursue the votes of the middle, and I can understand why people might not be interested in supporting either candidate. I think that John Kerry made a mistake by voting for the Iraq war, when I'm fairly certain that in his heart he knew it was the wrong thing to do. It's obvious that he supported it knowing that he'd be running for president, and he thought that voting against it would look bad. As it turns out of course, voting against it could have been the best thing he'd ever done.

This is the kind of thing that turns people off about the Democrats, because they stray from principle in an attempt to be more electable. I don't blame them, because that's how they can compete with the Republicans, who ALWAYS stick to their priciples, even when they're wrong. They're not afraid of losing their base, because they know that their base consists of people who just don't care about anyone else. Democrats have drifted away from their core values over the years in an attempt to please everybody, and I think that was the main point Costner was trying to make.

Having said that, I think that anyone who doesn't vote this time around is foolish, because in reality, by not voting to get rid of Bush, you are in essence voting to keep him.

Nader is a person who has done a lot for this country in the way of consumer rights and safety issues, and I commend him for it. But I have to say that as someone who has never been an elected official, trying to be the President right out of the gate is a bit arrogant. If he truly wants to advance his party and make a name for himself politically, he needs to start smaller. He needs to run for a local office. He needs to run for a seat in the senate or congress.

The reality is that very little of what happens to us is directly mandated from the office of the President. If he wants to put his money where his mouth is, and change the system for the better, he needs to prove to the American people that he's willing to start at the bottom, just like anyone would have to do with any job.

Costner said that Ralph Nader was someone whose message needed to be heard, and he's right. This year, however, his message to his supporters needs to be this:

"We will help you win the election, Mr. Kerry, but be advised that we will also hold you to a higher standard than that to which George W. Bush has been held. We expect that of you, because we know that you are a better person, and infinitely more qualified to hold the office of President than your opponent. We also know that as a person of principal, you will enthusiastically welcome that higher standard, and head this country back in the right direction."

Or something like that.

My point is that this kind of effort on the part of those who feel they have become disenfranchised by the two-party system would prove once and for all that they DO hold great deal of power in deciding presidential elections, and that both parties will have to start taking them seriously.

Sorry for the novel.

41. my view
Wes had to stay "on point" to a certain extent for the purpose of supporting Kerry. But I think he made some solid points. It was uncomfortable to watch Costner try to steal the spotlight. I think he was supposed to be the "Conservative" representative on the panel but as soon as the cameras started to roll and the crowd reaction came into play, he started to work for the applause. Sure Kev doesn't understand why Iraq and "Jobs" are a central issue in the campaign -- he lives on a $20 million ranch somewhere probably far off from reality. He kind of looked at Wes like he plans to play him in a large-scale, over-budgeted Hollywood epic ala Le Postman where they erect huge statues of Costner saving the world -- he's got an uncanny feel for the pulse of the voting public! What's up with maher giving all of this air time to idiots like Coulter and Costner so close to election day!
Cheers to Belz and Wes for staying sane, smart and effective . . .

Though parts of it were pretty cheesy, including the statue part.

'Waterworld', on the other hand, was a big pile of shit. I could live the rest of my life without seeing Kevin Costner drink his own piss.

Then again, maybe that's what he was drinking before coming on tonight.
