Bunning has a real shot of losing. And he only has himself to blame. Hell, not even two months ago, only a small percentage even knew Mongiardo's name. The polls now show they are tied.
Bunning's first booboo was when he said Mongiardo looked like one of the dead sons of Saddam Hussein.. First he denied he ever said it, then it took him months to apologize. Then he didn't debate Mongiardo in person. Instead he did it via satellite and he looked very bad. Then last week when asked about one particular issue or incident (which escapes me at the moment) he said he hadn't heard about it because he doesn't read the newspapers and only watches Fox News. And finally, a couple days ago, with Bunning nearby, a few Republican state senators said the things about Mongiardo being "limp wristed" and a "switch hitter."
Paul Patton was going to run for Senate before his sex scandal a couple years ago. He would have demolished Bunning too, but he screwed up royally.
As far as Mongiardo himself, he's a charming, smart fellow who's good on most issues, especially on taxes and importing cheap drugs from Canada. I met him at a restaurant here in Lexington and he's a good guy. In response to these "allegations," he's said defiantly he's not gay. But then he went the extra step and said he supports the ban on gay marriage, which pissed me off to no extent.
Actually, a couple months ago my boyfriend told me Mongiardo was, in fact, gay because his old boyfriend had had dinner with him once... Oh well... "Trust no one" I guess the saying goes.
So that's the deal from here. Bunning just screwed up time after time. Mongiardo didn't have to do a thing before Mongiardo signs and bumper stickers started springing up everywhere.
