Mrs. Greenspan (reporting for MSNBC on Hardball) sez Qatar gave USA a heads up about it (that part confirmed by other sources) and she added that she thinks we prevailed on Qatar to edit the tape before it was broadcast on al Jazeera. Wonder what was cut out?

of political signiffigance. If true, this story means the White House essentially CREATED the tape as it was released.

With film the final cut is everything; the editor becomes the ultimate author.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US diplomats in Qatar were given a copy of a videotape in which Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) threatens new attacks on the United States before it aired on Al-Jazeera television and unsuccessfully sought to prevent the network from broadcasting it, a senior State Department official said.

"We got a copy of the tape a few hours before it aired," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "We asked them not to air it because we don't think they should give a platform to terrorists like this who call for the killing of innocents."


The official said the request for the Doha-based Al-Jazeera not to broadcast the tape was made to the Qatari government, the head of which, Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, is the main backer of the channel. Other Qatari officials sit on the Al-Jazeera board.


The official suggested that there may have been more to the tape than the 18-minutes aired by Al-Jazeera during which bin Laden threatened the United States with attacks similar to September 11, 2001 and accused US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) of "misleading" the American people.

19. Don't act so surprised. They have been telegraphing this move for months.

They were QUOTED in a news story (will try to find it - archives closed) as saying that they would run on terror. KKKarl said they would have a few surprises for Kerry this month. They floated stories about schools as targets and election day as a target. It is absolutely predictable that there would be a tape and a threat right now. I'm just surprised that it is happening at the very last minute. I expected it earlier.

when he was shilling at the UN? Again al-Jazeera, it was an audio tape. Someone from al-Jazeera was interviewed on BBC earlier and confirmed they edited today's tape before broadcast.

If the Bush teams is saying bin Laden is the devil trying to influence the election, and the Bush team edited the tape to suit their purposes before it aired, then the Bush team is the devil trying to influence the election:

that was not broadcast. They only aired four paragraphs or so interspersed with commentary/summary; if the transcript I was reading was correct.
