This upcoming election is really about war or peace, although the American people have not yet grasped the full meaning of their votes. For the last 3 years, we have been a nation where many sought revenge for the attack of 9/11. And it was revenge for revenge sake. George W Bush was the right person to carry forth that revenge and to take the war to the "enemies".
However, America is not a nation of revenge. We cannot be at war forever - with others or ourselves. We seek a resolution of what happened on 9/11 but we do not necessarily seek it thru the barrel of a gun. We wish to remain strong and we wish to bring to justice those that attacked us, but we do not wish to strike out blindly and foolishly. We value our place in the world. We do care what other people around the world think about us.
It is ironic that we now have perhaps the most visible "peace" candidate in our nations history going against perhaps the most war-hungry president of modern times. And the people are going to have to choose. Will they choose a nation of peace or a nation of war? That is the basic choice that most voters will be making in this election, even though periphereal issues may cloud the real purpose of this election.
