1. I think they are in for a surprise.
I can't imagine a questionable election being ignored by the press and the people this time around.

of course it came out of the bushcrime admin so it may not be quite accurate.

i agree if it this election looks fishy and bush has stolen it we might be looking at yugoslavia redux with kerry playing the part of kostunica.

Bush administration lawyers are now attempting to overturn decades of legal precedence by claiming that under the Help America Vote Act only Attorney General John Ashcroft -- and not individual voters - have a right to ask federal courts to enforce voting rights

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/whitehouse/la-na-votesue29oct29,1,2023894.story?coll=la-news-politics-white_house

(LA Times....free subscription)

WASHINGTON — Bush administration lawyers argued in three closely contested states last week that only the Justice Department, and not voters themselves, may sue to enforce the voting rights set out in the Help America Vote Act, which was passed in the aftermath of the disputed 2000 election.

Veteran voting-rights lawyers expressed surprise at the government's action, saying that closing the courthouse door to aspiring voters would reverse decades of precedent.

Since the civil rights era of the 1960s, individuals have gone to federal court to enforce their right to vote, often with the support of groups such as the NAACP, the AFL-CIO, the League of Women Voters or the state parties. And until now, the Justice Department and the Supreme Court had taken the view that individual voters could sue to enforce federal election law.

But in legal briefs filed in connection with cases in Ohio, Michigan and Florida, the administration's lawyers argue that the new law gives Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft the exclusive power to bring lawsuits to enforce its provisions. These include a requirement that states provide "uniform and nondiscriminatory" voting systems, and give provisional ballots to those who say they have registered but whose names do not appear on the rolls.

8. Ummm...Ashcroft, you can suck my dick. Homey don't play that.
Ashcroft is gonna be smoking on the business end of a shotgun before he takes away individual voters' rights to sue in protection of their voting rights.

WE ARE TALKING FULL SCALE citizen COUP and government takeover if they want to play it that way.

Do they think Iraqis are making their lives a living hell? Wait until the cross over the RUbicon on something like this and they will see why the U.S. military is the best in the world.

Partly, it is because we Americans don't take sh!t. ESPECIALLY from our elected or appointed servants.

Can't wait to hear what the lawmakers who voted on this worthless bill think of this claim.

4. This was reported on Democracy Now this morning
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/29/1414225

I think it's originally in the LA Times.

As much as I think that there is a groundswell of support for Kerry growing, I think the Busheviks have used the past four years to rig the system in their favor. I hope to God I'm wrong, but I fear that these fascists are not going to leave office simply because the people vote them out.

11. Or....
Remember in F911 the beginning scene where all the house members got up to protest and didn't get anywhere without a Senator's signature.
I guarantee you Mark Dayton will be more than happy to sign if they try to pull any shit.

You need to register but it is worth your work to do so. The LA Times has had some great stuff on their editorial page in support of liberals/progressives.

(oopsie ... someone already posted this source but I'll leave it up anyway.)

14. They're TRYING But the Court So Far Ruled Against Them
"However, all three courts that ruled on the matter rejected the administration's broader view that voters may not sue state election officials in federal court."

Hopefully, this ruling will hold...

20. The troops are fighting to preserve our rights that the Repubs try to
take away and we can only complain to a Repub appointed AG! I guess that's what Bush means when he says he is trying to bring democracy to the rest of the world. Hey Bush what about us? We are spending 200+ billions to rebuild Iraq and bring them democracy while we are crumbling all around and losing our voting rights.

21. Just the fact that they're trying this should be big news
the courts have so far ruled against them, I understand, but even the attempt seems kind of stupid this close to the election. I'm sure they were trying to keep this quiet, but this is something everyone needs to know.
