Brown learns he can't serve as Kerry elector, steps down
Friday, October 29, 2004
Sabrina Eaton
Plain Dealer Bureau
Washington- Lorain Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown on Thursday agreed to step down as a presidential elector for John Kerry after discovering the U.S. Constitution bars federal officeholders from the largely ceremonial role.

The Ohio Democratic Party held an event in July where it selected 20 party members, including Brown, Parma Mayor Dean DiPiero and congressional candidate Capri Cafaro to officially designate Ohio's 20 electoral votes for Kerry should he win the state. <snip>

Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell will not take issue with Brown's substitution, spokesman Carlo LoParo said.

He said Cafaro would qualify as an elector even if she wins a congressional seat because the Dec. 13 meeting where electors officially designate the state's ballots would occur before she'd be sworn into office. <snip>

1. What I want to know is what bonehead appoints an ineligible elector?
If you're tasked with selecting electors, doesn't it make sense to read the rules first?

2. Oh sure, the "liberal" media is all concerned about this silliness.
But the fact that * and Crashcart were both from Texas in 2000 didn't cause any reason for concern. It wasn't even reported in the MSM, was it?

3. His late change of residence was accepted - no one challenge it.
Cheney had a place outside of Texas already, so the change only required his declaring that he had changed residency.

I wonder if the DNC will fix the Meek problem quickly?

4. As I recall,
he had to go to Wyoming and register to vote there to officially meet the requirements. And wasn't there something about him not meeting the official deadline for registering to vote?

5. that may well be true - my memory is not the best - but residency is
by simply claiming a location as your residence, absence fraud or bad -illegal - intent.

At least, those are the rules I have known - and "I have lived in many states.
