Schilling: "I was wrong"
"I am now not medically cleared to do anything until I see Doc on Sunday, so I cannot travel with President Bush tomorrow (Friday). Second, while I am a Bush supporter, and I did vote for him with an absentee ballot, speaking as I did the other day was wrong. While I hope to see him re-elected, it's not my place, nor the time for me to offer up my political opinons unsolicited. I am proud we have the right to vote, and the message I wanted to send but didn't, was that regardless of who you are voting for the bottom line is that you MUST vote. You must vote because there are millions of Americans who have given their lives before us, and will continue to give their lives after us, so that we can remain free to make the choices we need to make when it comes to electing our Nation's leaders." -- Curt Schilling

See, all those DU'ers who spoke out against him, WEREN'T wrong.

1. His agent pointed out...
that there are more of us than there are of them, and we won't be buying anything he endorses if he campaigns for a loser.

6. This seals it: His number one priority is money.
Affleck and co. were boycotted by the right wing and they don't care. Under Kerry they will lose their tax cut and they don't care. Whereas this guy is voting to protect his money and then when he sees he will have less money because of what he said, backed up.

7. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt
For all the screaming about Bush not taking responsibility for his actions, we should not be hypocrites and continue to criticize Schilling when he does.

17. I'm not.
He made a point of getting in the fact that he's voted for Bush and hopes he will be elected -- same message he was selling the other day. The rest of his words sound good, but the damage was done when he opened his mouth after the win. He's worried about his bottom line now.

8. No Schillin' for W!!!!
As a long suffering Sox fan, I'm going to cut Schilling a little slack. I was offended by his GMA remarks, but am greatful for what he's done for my team. Guess he forgot he plays in liberal New England!!!!!!

15. No DUers were wrong:
Schilling has the absolute right to say what his politics are, and support candidates he likes. It may have been in poor taste to use the grand triumph of the Red Sox winning the World Series to support Bush, but he was well within his first amendment rights. He was expressing his views.

The reason it may have been wrong for him to speak out was this: sports cuts across party lines. There are Republican and Democratic fans. People who may be amazed by his baseball skills (and his pitching in the post season was first rate) might not agree with him politically. Especially for the Red Sox fans (who have suffered for a lifetime), it doesn't seem right to divide them in their time of joy.

That said, Schilling had a right to go to a Bush rally and make a speech. He has a right to say on Good Morning America, "Vote for Bush." But the best message is the one he delivered this morning: vote, it doesn't matter who you vote for, but vote. Don't take freedom for granted.

Like a pitcher who takes an inning or two to find his groove, Schilling found it this morning. He should be commended for his statement. Voting is an important thing--too many people don't vote.

16. Somewhere, Will Pitt is saying "I told you lunkheads so."
Schilling is by no means a saint and obviously supports the wrong guy.

But the demonization of Schilling that happened here was absurd.

And I'm not even a Sox fan.

22. WHAT? Just the Opposite!
The guy admitted he was wrong.

Does one back away from a position because everyone is saying "Ah, leave the guy alone" or because everyone has said "Shut the hell up asshat!" ???

Anyway, I hope that now we all just let it go. The statement was made and apologies were made. Lets move on.

18. Die hard red Sox Fan to schilling:

Fuck you, Jesus freak.

I wouldn't buy anything you endorsed if you won 30 games next season for my team.

Don't you people see that this "apology" just lets him announce his support for Bush one more time?

I hope he bleeds out from the ankle. And I hope he tears his rotator cuff the next time he pitches. Bush trumps baseball.

19. chill
hate is a disease. cure yourself.

Jesus, sports hero has limited views on politics. Stop the presses.:wtf:

I thought the apology pretty classy. It's America, he can vote how he likes, but he realized walking political stages with those limited political views wasn't a good thing. He rethought and changed his actions, it's too much to expect entire epiphanies.

Ain't nobody a perfect human being.

Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 10:50 AM by rocknation
in the same sentence, LOL!

And of course his medical excuse is a crock--he pitched two games on that bloody ankle. Was he planning to WALK to New Hampshire, or has he never heard of crutches?

But it's good that we knocked him off the Bush tour--they're back to being stuck with Ahhnuld and Zell Miller again!

21. Good! That's what my point was. He can vote for whomever he likes BUT
it wasnt the place, nor the time, to start campaigning, I dont care WHO he's voting for.

Good. Someone got to him.

23. Money talks
It's an insincere and craven "apology."

Just what you'd expect from a Bush supporter.

He's not going out to campaign with Bush because he's a winner who can't afford to be seen with a loser.

Typical Bushwhacker.

25. My question is.....
How is he still registered to vote in Arizona when he moved to Massachusetts with his whole family over six months ago? He did so buying Drew Bledsoe's old home, a multi-million dollar mansion in Medfield, Mass.
