How's it going in Virginia?
I've heard encouraging things from Old Dominion and I feel an upset coming there if we get out the vote among African Americans and Northern Virginians. How's it actually looking on the ground?

1. My theory is that many military know they're taking it up the ass
because of Bush.

Only the blindest loyalists are stomaching the abuse they are receiving from Senior Nincompoop.

19. Unfortunately, a lot of the military families in my neighborhood have
Bush-Cheney signs in their yards (there are also a lot of Kerry-Edwards signs). It really makes me sad to see the extent to which they have been deceived.

I think the turnout will be very high on both sides.

2. Virginia is ready to kick some serious shrub.
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 09:34 AM by vadem2004
According to last week's Survey USA poll, Kerry is up by 13% in densely populated Northern VA (my neck of the woods). Our GoTV effort here is large & motivated -- we get those folks to the polls, we carry NoVA by a huge margin, and who knows what'll happen in Nov 2!

4. Good to hear!
If we win Virginia and Ohio, Bush cannot comeback from that.

3. ABSENTEE voting: turnout VERY high
I was told in election officer class yesterday that there have been so many absentee ballots cast so far that I can expect to spend several hours Monday evening marking the names in the poll books as having voted. (I don't see the actual ballots, just WHO cast one and their address)

At the Fairfax County offices yesterday morning there were a couple dozen people in line waiting to cast their absentee ballots. I was told it's been that way for a few days.

Finally, my precinct usually has 3-5 poll workers, this time we have 7 to handle the expected turnout. (I should note I did not work in the 2000 election, only State-wide and local elections plus primaries)

5. Virginia is BLUE...and we're working hard to keep it that way
on ELECTION DAY.....All Virginians are called to duty: VOLUNTEER for the next few days....call your local Democratic Party, sign up on Kerry's web site, call your local Kerry office, call your local DEMOCRATIC Governor, Major, Congressrep....

yesterday, in over 70 miles driving in Virginia....I one saw ONE bush* sign...the highways have LOTS and LOTS of Kerry signs....

the seniors are wearing Kerry buttons in the grocery stores...there are Kerry bumper stickers all over, and I did not see even one bush* bumper sticker at all....

we still need VOLUNTEERS for Saturday and Sunday blitz in Northern Virginia....the phone banks are humming, there's a lot of door-to-door direct contact...the Veterans are STANDING UP, as the Band-of-Brothers with John Kerry...and the U.S. Military fully understands that bush* doesn't care....we have a lean, mean political machine in place, fully operational...

the bush* people have crawled back under their rocks....we're not hearing anything from them at all...

Kerry ads are in all the newspapers and on TV....almost all LOCAL Virginia newspapers have endorsed Kerry....WE KNOW...the textile workers in VA have all had their jobs shipped overseas, the tobacco farmers are real MAD at bush*, and we're all inhaling Mercury from the coal-burning power plants compliments of bush*....

call up your local Kerry headquarters to help....we need YOU....

my prediction: it'll be CLOSE, but a firm WIN IN VIRGINIA....the general feeling is SOUTHERN style...we're really sick of bush* failures, it's time to send him home....

8. It's closer than people think
I don't think Kerry can make it over the hump this time. But eventually, Viriginia is going to be a solid Dem state. Northern VA is just growing too fast and the Repubs downstate aren't the insane variety you find in Texas. They are growing disenchanted with the national ticket.

Basically what's happening in Viriginia is what happened in the Deep South in the 70s and 80s. Those states elected Democrats out of habit even though the voters were growing more and more Conservative. Eventually, voters in the South started voting for the party they agreed with and not their historical affiliation.

Well, Virginia was always the most Republican state in the South. Except it is a genteel, somewhat moderate Republicanism. Basically, most people in Virginia have political beliefs like Bill Clinton's. It will change sooner or later.

12. I've been recruiting poll workers.
Every election we get high school students to help out as well. Some government teachers give extra credit for helping on a campaign.

I live in a Republican area and most years it's tough getting the students. Most of them go the way their parents go.

This year, my phone is ringing off the hook, with them calling me. If that is the way their parents are going, I would say that things are going very very well.

14. Here is Hampton Roads....
I see more and more Kerry signs... but when we were up in Williamsburg... That is clearly bushhell.

I'm have hopes.... None of the strategists talk about what happens if Kerry takes Va.
I guess they know for sure we're a repug state, even though we elected mark warner as gov. (sure wish he could run again.... maybe he can take Allen's senate seat)

20. Don't you have a Democratic governor in VA?
If the state can go Blue for the governor, I see a big chance for Kerry in the state. I have two kids there and they both are promising me that Kerry will take VA. One kid is military, one works in the defense industry and both are telling me that there are lots of former-Republican voters just salivating to get to the polls and vote out Bush.

Why no early voting in VA?

21. Norther Virginia.
OK I'm in No. Virginia and my neighborhood has K/E signs almost exclusively on the highway ramps as well as neighbor's homes (we are in a "transition" neighborhood). Even saw a sign go up in a retired military officer's yard. If we win it will largely because of the intense efforts of the Kerry base here. They have built up a strong Dem base (local lected officials, Black churches, etc.). Saw it with my own eyes as a Clarkie.

However, the absentee ballot issue raised in the previous post worries me because of the strong military and gov't contractor force, who usually are absentee voters.

On election day, we are hosting phone bank parties, and I'm working my voter precinct. The canvassing for Kerry has been excellent; very visible. Even the public housing homes have K/E yard signs. But in the areas near Shenandoah Valley, the border of WV, and the ultra-exclusive areas, I'm not sure how we're doing.

If Virginia goes blue, I'll know we are on the road to victory.
