Salt Lake City High School students pick Kerry over Bush (54% to 34%).
However Bush took Utah 74% to Kerry's 19%.

This was a mock election done by the National Student/Parent Mock Election. Their results nation wide were:

George W. Bush/Dick Cheney (Republican) 50
John F. Kerry/John Edwards (Democrat) 42
David Cobb/Patricia LaMarche (Green Party) 4
Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo (Independent) 2

Here's an article in the Salt Lake Tribune.

A snip from it:

If that is true, a healthy Democratic pocket is alive and well in Salt Lake City, where Kerry beat Bush by 54 percent to 35 percent, according to YouthCity, a Salt Lake City-sponsored civic group that collected the results. Matheson garnered 66 percent of the Salt Lake City high-school vote to Huntsman's 33 percent.
Students from East, West, Highland and Judge Memorial high schools participated.

Matheson is the Democratic candidate for governor.

8. A lot more than you would think
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 02:30 AM by Davion
As A GOP activist I told an anti-Dem joke amongst a few people at a stake conference and was frowned at and told that "there are people of all political persuasions here". In fact my Ward's leadership once had both a Repug AND a Dem running for office (different ones, of course!) Keep in mind that Mormons fed all of their members during the Great Depression by CHURCH WELFARE PROGRAMS!

Edited due to spelling errors because I am in SERIOUS violation of the Word of Wisdom.

4. That's great
Bush beat Gore 55-35 in Salt Lake county.

If this is how things are in Bush's strongholds, he's going down.

5. Except again, Bush took Utah big time in this election.....
And Salt Lake City is only about 170,000 people in a county of about 1 million. I'm sure Bush will take Salt Lake County again this year.

10. Yeah I have no doubt he will
and Bush may end up doing better this time. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 70% of the vote in the state.

Still it's nice to see that not everyone in probably the single most conservative state in the union is behind the mad man.

9. Trust me, not ALL of them will
Some of them will realize that they are sinful Sodomites and move to Southern Califronia, where they will engage in many activities they only fantasised about on their Missions... Or maybe that's just me...

11. Matheson actually has a chance
A very tight governors race, and similar to many senate races this year -- a Dem in a close contest to take a seat on red GOP turf.

I think Matheson's dad was a former Utah governor.

12. Is Congressman Matheson running?
Yes, his father was Governator for 2 terms in the late 70s/early 80s, but I am sad to hear he is running, because that means the 2nd CD will probably turn GOP unless there is a Smith or a Young (or, one may hope, a HINCKLEY) running this time.

They put all those "feed the poor and clothe the naked" Members in one district all the time, but it is still a 50-50 proposition. Ah well, trust in the invisible man in the sky and it will turn out right, I guess.

14. Well, there is hope for the future
I remember someone saying that the election in '00 was so important to the GOP (and why they had to cheat and why the Neocons and corporate/media types are so rabid) because this period in time is going to make the end of the road for them - they have no place in the future of the country. I hope that's true.
