DO you think Kerry/Dean would have been better?
I was talking with a friend at work today, who liked Dean like I did. He said if Kerry had of picked Dean over Edwards, he would'nt vote for Nader. I have begged and pleaded for him to vote for Kerry, I actually think he will. But what if Kerry had of picked Dean, you think the Raiders would drop their support for Ralph?

Just wanted opinions on the matter.

BTW, this election is'nt as close as the media tells us, Kerry will win by 5 points! I do not believe the polls, I think they are creating a horse race that is'nt there.

2. Nope
while Dean garnered a certain intensity among his voters, he also turned OFF a lot of people. I think his being on the ticket would've been a net less for Kerry.

8. I think it would have been a bad contrast.
The pundits would have compared Dean to Kerry over and over, would have used them and pitted them against each other. It would have made both of them look bad.

Edwards was the right pick.

There was something about Dean I never liked. Put him in charge of the Party, but don't put him up for elected office.

10. Wouldn't have worked, there had to be geographical balance.
Now, a Dean/Clark ticket, that would work....but let's not go there this week, eh? ;-)

11. I personally like Dean very much BUT

I think Edwards was a better choice for the reasons mentioned above. Naderites all usually so stubborn that only a very few would have changed their vote had Dean be the VP.

And that's all I'll say about that. But, I'll tell you this, he added immensely to this campaign. The majority of the people I've met on the canvasses have been former Dean campaigners. They've consistently been the ones willing to get up off their asses and get out there to make change. The Kerry campaign is lucky to have us. I hope they realize that. :hi:

17. Hell no, it would have been like Teresa last week
I love Dean, but too much potential for loose remarks that require a pooper scooper.

The GOP would have loved to distract from the Kerry campaign by playing the Iowa state recital screamfest with a tagline, "Do you want this man one heartbeat away from the presidency?"

19. Well...
Choice of presidential candidate may be debatable, but I feel that Edwards was by far the best VP choice. Since Cheney is seen as the weak link in the BC ticket, having Edwards provides a great contrast and further points out the weakness of Cheney.

22. No.
Count me in as another who just never "got" Dean, and always found Edwards charming and smart, just not quite ready to be "the" commander in chief. I was thrilled when Edwards was picked.

23. Lots of good feedback here.,,,
And I admire how the original poster has responded in this thread.

I will agree with some posters here that though we all owe a lot to Howard Dean for energizing our base, I agree that John Edwards was a far smarter VP choice for many reasons, some of which have already been pointed out.

26. No
Dean had a lot of ardent fans among students and upper middle class/affluent people, but my Midwestern relatives couldn't stand him--I'm not sure why, but they were definitely turned off. Sorry, but that's the truth. On the other hand, they love Edwards.

My relatives are old-time Democrats.

27. It would've been a mess
As the primaries demonstrated, Dean and Kerry have very different styles and temperaments; add to that their similarities (same age group, similar backgrounds, both used to being The Man) and that would have led to personal friction, which the medea would've used to light a fire they could torch the campaign with (say what you will about the */Crashcart ticket, but the division of labor is very clear).

Edwards is a better choice because he's clearly Kerry's junior in age and experience, but at the same time he's no pushover and he brings very different strengths to the ticket.

Also-and I've never said this before, because I don't want to sound like I'm condescending to the Dean folks-I wonder if maybe the presidency isn't, in a cosmic sense, the best role for him, just as Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Paine wouldn't have been the best choices among the Founders to become President, but we would have been lost if not for the part they did play. I'd love to see Dean as chairman of the DNC or some role which allows him to serve as a spur to the party.
