Kerry Endorsements Up--Possibilities of a Tie Vote EC

36 Papers Abandon Bush for Kerry

By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 27, 2004; Page A13

The Orlando Sentinel has backed every Republican seeking the White House since Richard M. Nixon in 1968. Not this time.

"This president has utterly failed to fulfill our expectations," the Florida paper said in supporting John F. Kerry....

The Sentinel is among 36 newspapers that endorsed President Bush four years ago and have flip-flopped, to coin a phrase, into Kerry's corner. These include the Chicago Sun-Times, the Los Angeles Daily News and the Memphis Commercial Appeal, according to industry magazine Editor & Publisher. Bush has won over only six papers that backed Al Gore, including the Denver Post,Bush has won over only six papers that backed Al Gore, including the Denver Post, which received 700 letters -- all of them protesting the move.

Nine more papers, including the Cleveland Plain Dealer yesterday, abandoned Bush after four years but did not support the Massachusetts senator. Instead, these papers -- the Detroit News, the Tampa Tribune and the New Orleans Times-Picayune among them -- threw up their collective hands and made no endorsement.

Dana Milbank. Washington Post
"Tuesday's election will probably be decided in 11 states where polls currently show the race too tight to predict a winner. And, assuming the other states go as predicted, a computer analysis finds no fewer than 33 combinations in which those 11 states could divide to produce a 269 to 269 electoral tie.

1. Someone refresh my memory
If there were to be a tie in the EC, do they arm wrestle for it?

Who or what decides?

4. It goes to the U.S. House of Representatives for a vote
That would be the House that is seated in late January, resulting from the elections. Unless something drastic changes, the House will probably still be majority Republican in January 2005.

Wanna guess which candidate they would pick?

imo, this is more wishful thinking by repuke operatives. They recognize that they have lost the popular vote again, now they are hoping for some kind of loophole so that shrub will be reappointed.

Ain't gonna work. I predict EV landslide for Kerry.

5. 12th Amendment
If there is a tie, the House of Representatives votes via a state-by-state delegation. In other words, each state has one vote, regardless of the population or actual number of representatives. If you look at the electoral map, you will see that is a Bush victory.

7. The Dems need to use the Constitution as well
The Democrats in the Senate need install Edwards as VP and immediately work on either articles of impeachment or talk of invoking the 25th amendment because of Bush's worsening alcoholic dementia. Once Shrub is out of the way Presidents Edwards can use the same amendment to install Howard Dean as the new VP.

9. That would be nice except that Dems don't have majority in Senate
The only way it would work is if several Republican senators just didn't show up to vote, or decided they didn't like Cheney after all.

6. 33 combinations lead to an EC tie
That's in 11 states, which means there are 2^11 = 2048 possible combinations. Meaning that, mathematically, there is only a 1.6% probability of an EC tie. I'm not that worried.

13. But if the EC vote is 269-268, the choice still goes to the House of Reps
To be elected by the EC, Kerry needs 270 votes, not merely one vote more than Bush. Exactly 50% of the votes will stil allow Bush to get reelected.

12. Did you hear about the one electoral voter that would switch to Kerry?
Out of the corner of my ear this morning running out of the house I heard this...didn't get any details. Then I got to work and a guy said that there is a corresponding guy that would switch to Bush....so it's a wash.

Obviously if it's a tie and goes to the House we're done.

But in my opinion the real problem is in the scrutiny that will be given the voting machines and so forth. We've never had such a polarized situation or people so ready to battle one way or the other.

Recent poll showed 72% of Americans thought this election was very important and impacting significantly their lives....last election was something like 40%.

14. I hope lots of people in the Orlando area got to read that
endorsement. I don't buy the paper, just read stuff online. I bet the hardcore Republicans will claim that the Orlando Sentinel is just another example of the liberal media bias. They always say this when things don't go their way.
