News poll puts Bush, Kerry in dead heat

Michigan results show lead is a moving target; economy remains top issue among voters

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and President Bush have moved into a statistical dead heat in Michigan, with the latest Detroit News tracking poll showing the same kind of volatility that has baffled pollsters and pundits nationwide in recent weeks.

The poll taken Wednesday, Thursday and Monday continues to show that jobs and the economy are overwhelmingly the top concern of Michiganians but not necessarily to the advantage of either candidate.

Kerry was the choice of 45 percent of those surveyed, Bush was at 44 percent and independent Ralph Nader was at 1 percent. Bush held a lead ranging from 3-5 points last week, according to The News statewide survey of 600 likely voters. Other Michigan polls have shown Kerry leading by as much as 9 percentage points.

Detroit News pollster Steve Mitchell said Kerry was able to erase Bush's narrow lead in last week's polls by a strong showing in Monday's survey.

It's hard to gauge what happened, but Kerry was in town (Warren) on Monday and that was touted in newspapers and news broadcasts in the Detroit area, Mitchell said.

8. Yep- but you can't tell that to some DU'rs
they take some perverse pleasure in being the media's dupes and touting obviously bogus polls to freak people out.

After watching this behavior for so many months, I'm convinced it would make an excellent study that could be published in a psych journal.

3. The Pollster Probably Made The Numbers Up Or Made Changed His
Methodology Midstream...

I would suspect pollsters look at other pollsters findings and make adjustments to their models if they differ greatly from other polls conducted at the same time....

We all know there's one pollster who never adjusts their model...

7. Easy win for Kerry
I’m going all out here in Michigan for Kerry, we are doing are best to carry the state! I’m confident that the African American vote will pull through; there is strong support for Kerry in many metro Detroit suburbs, as well as within the city. The Bush Civil Rights record is a disgrace to our nation, all the Bushies have, at best, impeded civil rights initiatives constantly.

12. WP had a long piece about Muslim and Arab voters. They are going
Kerry by substantial numbers. Michigan has a couple of hundred thousand Muslim voters. I believe in 2000 they favored Bush.
