I was standing in a LOOOOOOONG line at the student union today and caught what I considered to be a terribly biased (or maybe just unfair) newsbyte on the canvassing in Iowa. The topic of the story was the many supporters of both Dean and Gephart who have traveled from out of state to canvas for their candidates. I simply could not believe the way they covered this. First they show a bunch of kids in a mini-mart grabbing junk food on their way out to canvas for Dean. The kid (and I do mean 'kid') knocks on a door and says he's a Dean supporter. He fumbles a bit (who wouldn't, being maybe 20 and on a major news station) then asks if she can talk. She tells him she's just the babysitter and has a sick baby. It was very foot-in-the-door, and nothing every door-to-door supporter hasn't experienced before. The poor kid quite sheepishly walks down the sidewalk, looks into the camera and says, "She's the babysitter." End of discussion and on to Gephart...who they continue to cover for a inordinate length of time. They show two middle-aged men with documents, engaging in a political conversation with an Iowan (is that a word?). They are well-spoken, personable and carry themselves pretty well on camera.
Did anyone else catch this around 4:15 today? I don't recall if it was CNN, MSNBC or FOX. I did catch that they were trying pretty hard to make Howard Dean look bad. I was, quite frankly, disgusted. What we think of each of the candidates is beside the point. Shouldn't those who don't know be allowed to base their opinions on issues, as opposed to media spin?
