Texas Republicans counting their chickens
...before they're hatched.

My son's friend, who is a very nice kid except for the fact that his parents are Repulicans, is taking the required Government class in high school. He is not yet old enough to vote, but close. Anyway, the teacher gave them the assignment of working for 3 hours for a political campaign... any campaign they liked.

He contacted Bush HQ... and was politely told he was not needed. Same with the Republican Party... and Kay Granger... and, well you get the idea. So who did he volunteer for to satisfy his assignment? The campaign of John F. Kerry.

So what we have here in Texas are Republican campaigns that are so smug they turn away motivated help. I hope it comes back to bite 'em in the ass!

3. And meanwhile the Dem base is getting more and more energized
I've told this little story before, but I mentioned the location of the local party HQ to another of my son's friends, and he went out on a precinct walk the next day!

5. It's in their nature to turn away people...
They can't help themselves. I was in a Democratic HQ and saw young, old, Hispanic, women, men, Black, Asian....

We've been having our Kerry signs stolen all over the place and I'm sitting up a squad in the next few days with video cameras to bust some, but I thought I'd better go over to the Repug HQ and tell them there would squads busting people stealing Kerry signs and if they wanted they might want to do the same for people stealing Bush signs for equal press treatment (one problem, of course, is that their signs aren't being stolen, big surprise).

What did Republican HQ look like? All men, all white, all between about 25-60. Exclusivity is a losing long term strategy in a country becoming more and more diverse. They just haven't figured it out yet.

6. Also, in a parking lot last night
A woman gestured for me to roll my window down. When I did, she said, "I love your Kerry stickers!"

I hope Texans are on the verge of coming to their senses. (I don't actually consider myself a Texan since I'm a yankee translplant.)
