DeLay suing Howard Dean?
by kos
Mon Oct 25th, 2004 at 22:47:49 GMT

I've received an unconfirmed tip that DeLay just filed a libel suit against Howard Dean. The target would be this ad Democracy for America is running in DeLay's district.

If this is true (and treat as rumor until further confirmation), it would guarantee the ad gets played in countless news shows from here to election day.

1. Get Michael Moore on this one...this is right up his alley!
Moore is the master of media judo - the art of turning your opponents forceful attempts to stop you to your advantage. He does it every time...it's so funny. It's like they never learn.

I do hope Dean's anti-Delay ad gets played over and over in the news. I contributed money to get that ad aired (based on a tip here at DU).

2. Hey, what about "tort reform" Tom?
You lyin' bag of shit. Hypocrit and stain on Texas.

Shouldn't you refrain from "clogging up the courts" with shit like this bugman?

3. What an un-American creep! The commercial has nothing that
could be considered remotely libelous. He's a public figure, and the commercial mostly shows headlines clipped from newspapers. The pig isn't used to having someone stand up to him.

4. Desperate campaign tactic
I'd love to see the suit itself to see what perceived injury Delay says he suffered (I'm sure it'll end up on the Smoking Gun soon enough), but if DeLay wins, expect the suit to be dropped on 11/3.

Remember, the truth is an absolute defense to libel in the US.

8. Lawsuit is over a great ad
The ad in question has been running here in Houston for a week or so. It is a great ad. I hope that any lawsuit by Delay will cause the news to show the ad for free.

The ad is pretty straightforward and I can not imagine what Delay is complaining about. Truth is an absolute defense to any libel claim.

9. Yes, its true...
Gov Dean mentioned the lawsuit (specifically for "Defamation of Character") at a fundraiser for anti-Delay ads this evening. He said the content was absolutely legit (Delay was apparently complaining about the headlines, which came from real newspapers), and all it would do was provide more free publicity.

11. The lying piece of shit
just like all right wing hypocrite bastards, they like trial lawyers when they benefit them and want to be able to clog the courts with law suits to justify their own reprehensible actions but don't want a mother to be able to sue a doctor for malpractice if her child's health and well-being is ruined for life because of a mistake.

13. What if Dean and the DNC uses this to their advantage?
First suggestion we take Bush own words about them and then echeo it with what Delay is trying to do. There should be a text caption reading "Bush says the oppsite of what he preaches! If his own party can't do what they preach then how can we trust another 4 years of a Republican run house, Senate, Presidency?

12. Make it worse for him...
http://www.richardmorrisonfordistrict22.com/

They got $12,000 to go for their goal.

Why, in a country like this one, could the entire nation be held hostage by the stupid decisions of a single, small suburb in Texas. If I were in district 22, and DeLay wins again, I'd be worried that the rest of the country would invade and riot in our streets, to teach us a little lesson.

As a non-Texan, it's awfully tempting to do just that.

14. DeLay is a poster child for the Proportional Representation cause
He has exploited the very worst problems of our present Congressional system to his advantage, and to the detriment of democracy. Dean has suggested that Congress is long overdue for a major structural overhaul. Maybe he's planning to use DeLay as "Exibit A"?

17. It is true. Dean announced it at the Retirement party.
The ad was checked by lawyers, and it is just fine. Dean was not unhappy at all.

18. dean should seek compensation
charging DeLay with filing a frivolous lawsuit. Because there is nothing...not even close...actionable in that ad.

19. Petition to remove DeLay from office signed by more than 2,500
http://www.petitiononline.com/tdl0000/petition.html
I already presented it to the two top Congress members of the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct to ask them to begin proceedings to expel DeLay from the House for misconduct and violation of House rules, especially the first rule of the House Code of Ethics.
That first rule states, "A member, officer, or employee of the House of Representatives shall conduct himself at all times in a manner which shall reflect creditably on the House of Representatives."
If Traficante can be expelled, so can DeLay....
