Dean wins the DC primary
Howard Dean won the non-binding DC primary with 42% of the vote to his nearest competitor, Al Sharpton's 35%. Carol Mosley Braun received 12% and Dennis Kucinich 8%.

Turnout was around 8% which is about the same as it was in '96 and '00.

It is worth noting that in DC the majority are minority voters, chiefly African-Americans and interestingly Dean defeated two eloquent and in the case of Miss Braun, well-qualified, African-American candidates which seems to indicate that Dean has more appeal in the African-American community than some of his rivals are currently saying.

1. Kucinich
Geeze, many of the major candidates weren't even on the ballot (Kerry, Clark, Gephart, Edwards) and Kucinich still can't crack double digits in a city that 80% Democratic???

7. That is not at all surprising considering the large African-American
population in DC.

6. Commentary:
I'm not sure what the story is. The low turnout (15 percent) sort of gave the media an excuse to ignore the contest, with good reason. Not only did the election not count (nothing more than a glorified straw poll), but no one showed up to the election that didn't count. As such, there wasn't anything too compelling about the contest.

Dean did what he needed to do, even winning the African American vote against Sharpton and Braun. Had he lost to Sharpton, the story would've been a lot different. As is, nothing unexpected happened, and the world moves on with hardly a glance.

Even as an appetizer, this contest was seriously unsatisfying. Let's get the Iowa show started.
