Channel One student poll: Bush in a landslide!??
The national, daily in-school news show "Channel One" compiled its national student vote today. Unfortunatly, the results were not good for our guys. Bush ended up with about 371 EV's to Kerry's 150ish. They had bush taking Vermont, PA, Fl, OR, WA, and all sorts of anomolies. Thoughts?

21. Channel One is almost exclusively shown in LOW income districts.
In many places, it's the only way the schools can get AV equipment for every classroom.

I'd say it's much more of a "What's The Matter With Kansas?" type of issue. It's all about god, guns, gays and Baaaay-bies than economics, social policy and foreign policy.

Then there's the fact that soundbites are far more easily understood than long commentary on policy, and kids have both a short attention span (in general) and less exposure and understanding of nuance (again, in general) What Bush says is easily understandable to a 14 year old... what Kerry says takes more brains and more consideration of the issues. I really think the issue has far more to do with the fact that the pResident has the cognitive and verbal ability of a High School freshman (his part of the debates come up at a 8.9 on the Kincaid grade level reading scale...) and so they kids identify with him better than any actual conservative bias.

Let's just be glad that the children can't vote.

32. We are not in a low income district
And my daughter has to watch it everyday for 15 minutes in her last class at middle school.

39. 15 MINUTES!!! It was 5 minutes when I was in school...
And 5 minutes when my stepdaughter was parked in front of it in her middle class, middle school. (5 years ago.)

Here's how to tell if your school district is hurting for money, regardless of the income levels of the families in the area: Soda machines in the schools. Fast food in the cafeterias.
Advertising on the buses, in the stadiums, or other places. Billboards in the hallways. Those are all indicators that property tax revenue is not keeping pace with expenses.

If your community is not voting for funding increases, then the schools are going to hurt. My step-daughter was in Colo Springs District 11, one of the better funded districts in Colorado, in a pretty reasonable community... and they had to whore and schill the kids to every corporate sponsor they could to make ends meet... and we parents STILL had to do the magazine sales and chocolate sales and Market Day to provide for the niceties.

We saw the same thing in Denver in Arapahoe Cherry Creek 5. (Part of our problem, admittedly, is an excess of school districts. Local control has really gone a bit far here. 9 districts in a town of 400,000 is pretty high...)

Could this be your issue? But 15 minutes... that needs to be brought up with the School Board.

11. 1 isn't a news channel

It's an outlet for large corporations to indoctrinate (as the above poster stated so eloquently) the student body with a barrage of adverts.

13. Been in Channel 1 poll
In 1992 at my high school

It is very hard for young adults and high schoolers to vote against an incumbent. They have such a respect for authority figures and they are so comfortable with authority it is hard to vote against. Kids don't become independent until college.

14. kids don't vote
the weekly reader poll predicted bush defeating clinton by a landslide back in 92.

Who would respond to a channel one poll?
1) a few kids who wanted to be involved in the political process
2) children of freepers who are used to idoctrination and accept it
3) bored kids (often with a twisted sense of humor)

19. I have Ch. 1 at my school and due to their conservative slant, I
teach right through it. After summer break, they ran a 6 min. recap of the Dem convention, then covered the Repub. on in detail everyday.

It's shitty news. We hate it and we don't watch it so why go to their site and participate in a bull shit poll?

It's days are numbered as my school is looking to cancell it next year.

20. no suprise
teens too young to vote overwhelmingly chose incumbents. Some such pool my school took part in in 1996 was something like Clinton 65/Dole 35. This doesn't mean shit.

24. Liberal schools reject this
Don't like having propaganda and corporate ads pushed into their schools. The pay-off isn't enough. So I'd say that's why the voting is skewed to Bush.

25. silly poll
school polls are silly. I remember the 1968 election in mine. (3d grade). Wallace won, Nixon was 2d and Humphrey was a poor third. I was the only Humphrey voter in my classroom and the repuk kids kept tearing down my signs. Some things don't change.

BTW, Humphrey won my home town.

31. I was just forced to watch this crap with my students...
They all know I'm for Kerry, so a bunch of them were giving me a hard time. (since unfortunately many of them are for Bush :eyes: ).

I have to conclude that a bunch of small, rural districts such as my own must receive Channel One.

And I've gone to high school in Maryland and California. I've heard people mention it here and there, but outside of that I have really no idea what it is. I dare them to poll at my high schools, though. Both have VERY strong Kerry support with little to no Bush support.

37. Channel One blows.
I had to watch that shit from 6th grade through 12th. All it is is fifteen minutes of "news," half of which is taken up by commercials aimed at teenagers. Oxy pads! Mountain Dew! Doritos! Deodorant! New dramas on the WB! Ugh. It's actually a training ground for tomorrow's cable media pundits, as several newer faces started to emerge got their start there.

Bush beat Gore 59-36% in 2000.
