A Convenient Recantation
By Nancy Miller Saunders

October 20, 2004—He has arisen from the grave to denounce John Kerry with the Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth" (SBVT).
At least that's the way it seems to me since, more than 30 years ago, I was told that my young friend Steve Pitkin had died. This past August 22, a Steve Pitkin posted a message on the SBVT website in which he retracted the testimony he gave at the Winter Soldier Investigation (WSI) conducted in the winter of 1971 by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). He declared "the entire testimony I gave was a bold face lie."
In April, 1971, a few months after he testified, Steve and I enjoyed one of those brief but meaningful friendships that blossom in the flurry of preparing for an event that is important to both. In this case we were working on final details for VVAW's biggest demonstration.
...
I can't help but wonder if this Steve Pitkin, who has turned so viciously on Kerry and VVAW, really is the Steve Pitkin I knew. I have seen only written statements, no pictures, no television spots, even though one with him could be twisted into a powerful condemnation of Kerry since the only shots of Kerry in "Winter Soldier" show him with Steve.
Steve had prominent features that would still be identifiable today. Surely, not even the lying SBVT would sink so low as to sully the name of a deceased young man for cynical political gain. Or would they? I don't know.
