Is Bush taking Saturday off?!
I'm reading at Atrios that Bush is taking Saturday off. This would be the second week in a row with a day off the campaign trail, and just 10 days before Election Day.

What the hell is going on?

http://atrios.blogspot.com/2004/10/bush-in-crawford-on-saturday.html

October surprise coming up?
News so bad that Bush wants to avoid the campaign trail?
Another scrambling strategy re-tooling session?

I dunno. I'm a bit irked.

3. And fragile. He NEEDS his R & R. Otherwise things get...oogy.

I expect. The "Bush on the Couch" guy had said as much (regarding *'s generous vacations and "downtime" sessions, and short workdays). Apparently, there's not much room for flexibility in the ol' sleep schedule when you're a dry drunk; and you get stressed out REAL fast.

Anyway, why should he need to actually be there during his campaign? His actual persence doesn't seem to have been required for much else during his entire term...

5. It's a head-fake for the public - They did the same thing in 2000
As long as they have the media pushing the "Bush is ahead" meme, their calculation is that they gain more by giving the appearance of being unconcerned. It worked pretty well for them in 2000 as many prominent Dems went on talk shows talking about Gore's campaign failures before any votes were cast. Don't fall for it. Our guy has ALL the momentum and the LEAD in the battleground states. As long as our spokespeople keep repeating that on the air then Bush will rue taking the time off.

6. It is the same disillusion that has him thinking Iraq is going well
and the economy has turned the corner.
He thinks he is doing great in the campaign and everyone loves him. He thinks he does not need to get out there and press the flesh.

8. Depends on the definition of 'off'
He'll be spending the day with 'the faithful' in Florida.

Bush will return Friday night to St. Petersburg for a private fundraiser at the Snell Isle home of investor Jim MacDougald that is expected to raise about $1-million for the Florida Republican Party. Bush will spend the night in St. Pete Beach and campaign Saturday in Lakeland, Fort Myers, Melbourne and Jacksonville.

10. Everywhere Kerry goes that day, he should cite the new total
of *'s time off. The pResidency is hard work, and so is campaigning.

* needs a permanent vacation.
