It's not geographical, but we are dangerously approaching a civil war. Kerry's most difficult challenge will be to lessen the division that might bring this great experiment in democracy to an end. Just as the Arab world - Hell, just as the entire world - is being torn apart by the fear of those who feel powerless and unheard, and the fear of those who need to hold on to everything they've got, I see fear as the prime divider within our country.
- The religious right is afraid of the evils of Satan.
- Rabid consumers are afraid of not having enough, or not being enough.
- Gangbangers are afraid for their survival and show it as being afraid of nothing.
- Single, working mom's are afraid for their children.
- Businessmen are afraid of the next downturn.
- Workers are afraid of the next layoff.
- Progressives are afraid of the right.
- I'm afraid of what 4 more years of Bush will do to the human race.
- We are afraid of 'Other' whether they be gays, Arabs, Muslims, republicans, fundamentalists, the religious right,......
When we act out of fear, we usually don't do very well - fight, flight or freeze. Our reptilian brains are in control, shutting down our more social and collaborative functions. Bush's answer is to fight. It's a powerful way to appease the fear (to manipulate by the use of fear).
Hopefully Kerry's answer will be to ease the level of fear. To take control away from those who manipulate through fear, and ease us out of this heightened state that severely limits our ability to even talk to each other, let alone to work together for the common good.
One can only hope ~ and work our tails off!
