1. Interesting.................
"W. is losing steam among the Thinking Republicans".

However, the vast majority of Republicans are of the "non-thinking" variety and would continue to support him if he ate a baby in The Rose Garden on National Television. The "non-thinking" Republicans are the dangerous ones.

3. That deserves a quote!
On the domestic front, President Bush has shown complete fiscal irresponsibility. It is unconscionable to declare war and then to lower taxes for the wealthy. No other president has ever lowered taxes in time of war. The result is a deficit so large that we have endangered the well-being of our grandchildren. That is immoral and irresponsible.

President Bush refuses to take responsibility for his own actions and policies. Instead, he blames others. He talks in sound bites, uses slogans and misleading labels, relies on spin, photo ops and staged events, and brutally smears his opponents. That is not leadership.

I just want to make sure our Freeper trolls and lurkers see this. I admire how well he summed it up. Bush = bad!

5. On the fence
Hi, new here, and a little nervous. Wouldn't let me start a new topic, so had to jump in somewhere... I have been a republican all my life, from a long line of them. Been having a lot of second thoughts lately though, hard as I try to remain loyal..Even took an online "mini poll" to see which candidate best represented my ideas. Imagine my shock when I came out nearly 70% for Kerry. Made me do alot of soul searching. Have watched all of the debates and have to say that Kerry is refining his skills, and Bush seems to be bumbling. The worst part for me is all of the mud slinging. I would so love it if they would stop telling me what the other did wrong and tell me what they plan to do right. In this race, it almost seems to me, that I am just trying to figure out who is the better liar. I am very discouraged, fearful to let Bush have another go round, and nervous to let Kerry in at a time like this. I know one thing, that I will always believe, that although Saddam needed taking down, and I am glad he is gone, I firmly believe that Bush went after him to distract from the failed attempts to find Bin Laden. He needed a victory, any victory and I think he went about it the wrong way. We should have kept the heat on Bin Laden until we found the rat bastard and skewered him on a hot stick.
Do you think Kerry has the stick-to-it-iveness that it requires to clean up the mess and finish the real job? Yeesh. Thanks for listening.

7. Welcome Lady Leo
I'm relatively new here too. I've been coming back every day since the debates, I am so determined to not see Bush in the White House for another 4 years. I'll copy a portion of an e-mail I sent recently to a news reporter:
___________________________________________________________________
George Bush is a hypocritical liar, and Dick Cheney is a war profiteering criminal. We are in a war that was not provoked, as Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the attack on this country. No weapons of mass destruction were found. We have ruined necessary ties with the UN and other countries. Halliburton is benefiting from this unnecessary war which has resulted in thousands of deaths. The economy is abysmal with outsourcing of American employment. The Health Industry is becoming ruined by the pharmaceutical and insurance industries which only have profits in mind. The media is not covering events as they should be covered because of bias in favor of the current administration. The media's main interest is in maintaining and expanding media conglomerates whose news is filtered from the point of view of stocks and company profits. The environmental standards have declined to the extent that very good and credible scientific studies have largely been ignored by this administration in favor of big business. This current administration favors the wealthy, big business, pharaceuticals, insurance companies, and PAC's at the expense of a vanishing middle class.

I cannot honestly say one good thing about the Bush administration. These are primary reasons for voting against Bush, but after the debates, I was able to witness the clarity, integrity, and intelligence in Kerry that this country so sorely needs. We all had to witness painful and false advertisement against this man for months, much like Bush and Rove did against Ann Richards in the Texas gubernatorial race. After the first debate, I was no longer voting against Bush, but for Kerry. Hopefully, he will be able to restore some of the damage done to this country, reverse some of the damaging policies that Bush has opted for, and bring back necessary unity and faith in our elected officals.

Who cares about delusional cheerleaders for Bush. I'm cheering for Kerry.

___________________________________________________________________
I do indeed think that Kerry will be superb. If you are worried about terrorism, Bush has brewed more terror in Iraq since the war. I too despise the ugly politics, but with Carl Rove at the helm that's what you get. I have never been so worried about the future of our country, and it's not because of terrorism as much as this current administration. I am deadly fearful that they might be re-elected. I hope this isn't too lengthy for a newcomer!

8. Hi shelley
Hi Shelley, thanks for the welcome. No, not too long and I appreciate your input. I agree with much of what you said and certainly share your fear for our country. Our children will reap what we sow, and that is a big part of why this is so important to me. I love this country, Proud as I can possibly be to be an American and want my children to be able to say the same when it is their turn. Thanks again for the welcome, I look forward to talking with you again.

10. on stick-to-it-iveness
If you want a president who perseverates on his chosen path to his gut-feeling-based goal, even when it's disastrous, then you need to stay with Bush. But I can't think of any other reason to vote for Bush.

His deficits are ruining the country fast. Economists say the tipping point is close, when the U.S. federal financial problem becomes so bad that China, Saudi Arabia, and the other outsiders who own most of our "savings bonds" won't continue buying our debt unless they get junk bond interest rates. That will wreck our economy and the world's.

I could go on, but I've got canvasssing to do.

11. Welcome LadyLeo
That "mini poll" shows how the republican party you grew up with has left the reservation. I had never been politically involved because of the negative campaigning. It's probably impossible to run a race today by taking the high road. Before we get to that level we need to get more people thinking about politics and questioning the bs. I was not originally a Kerry supporter (Dennis Kucinich was my man) but doing the research on Kerry's history assures me he's a good choice. We are really running a three way race between Bush*, Kerry, and the media. Don't believe the bs and get the real news on the internet. I have different thoughts regarding Saddam but we're grown ups and can disagree and still get along.

Welcome to the new town square of the 21st Century! Hope you stay for a while.

14. Hi Tech
Thanks for the welcome and for your input. I do appreciate it. I agree about the negative campaigning, and I myself have only become "seriously" political in the past couple of elections. I remember nearly pulling my hair out when the fiasco happened with the last election. I seem to see a lot more people thinking politically and planning to vote, I see more ads urging people to vote than ever before, or possibly I am just noticing it more..whichever the case may be. But either way, I think it is a good thing.
Oh and about agreeing to disagree, I think that is just the way it is...I am not out to push my beliefs on anyone, and I fully respect your right to your opinions. Thats what makes the world go 'round...lol

13. Welcome to DU LadyLeo!
I'm also a fairly new democrat and I must say, it feels GREAT! I changed my stance during Bush's second run for governor and knew that I had made the right choice to go dem after he won the race. How the man was ever selected to be president after his dismal performance in Texas is beyond me. When he first started stumping for the presidency and all I heard were his rehashed governor speeches, I knew then that he was all talk and that especially, our fiscal and enviornmental headways were doomed. Who knew about the new century papers and the neocon spin that was going to take this country by surprise?
Consider Bush as a lame duck president. Having not vetoed one single spending bill, if he wins another term, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he will bury us in a sea of debt, not to mention the relentless wars which garner him the title of war president.

15. Please trust that poll you took -
it describes what you want for this country.

Also, if you can link to it please send it to any friends you have that are questioning like you.

If you approach people this way and leave the candidates out of the equation more people will vote to help make America come out of this nightmare.

We can't afford 4 more years of this

Welcome to DU

18. Morning Merb..
You're right, that is exactly why I took the poll that way. I wanted to vote for my choices and see which candidate matched my views closest. I really was shocked to get the results. Thanks for the welcome, and I look forward to talking with you again...

16. Newbie
I too am a former longstanding repub (about 30 years) who has realized that Bush is wrong for the job. In fact, because of him and the entire neo-con takeover of my former party, my shift is likely permanent. Although there are some issues in the Dem party with which I disagree, such disagreements are allowed and debated. I am not castigated for being a "non-believer." I fully and absolutely believe the nation will be shocked by the number of people like you, and me, who change this election.

19. Hi Newbie..
I also have some points that I disagree with , but in reality, I think that there will always be some points of disagreement. Not sure anyone is truly 100% in agreement with every single detail of any party. I also agree with you that a LOT of people are having questions and analyzing their belief system, and possibly changing their stance...Thinking is a GOOD thing. ;)

20. Welcome to DU;
It has to be hard to give up a long held belief.I compare leaving your party to leaving your church. It takes A LOT OF PAINFUL THOUGHT.It is not done lightly.

I left my church after 10 years of questioning. In both instances essential beliefs are fully examined.

This country is in tough shape and it needs to be fixed now.

Thanks for realizing this.

I love it when we bash through the barriers erected by the corporate media and come together as Americans who just want what's best for America. Welcome to all newcomers.
