Best response to the Mary Cheney issue
This is truly the heart of the argument and needs to be repeated:

http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2004/10/15/mary_cheney/index.html

"Let's get one thing straight. It is not an insult to call a proudly public lesbian a lesbian. It's an insult to gasp when someone calls her a lesbian. That's how all the gays I have spoken to the past 24 hours perceived the press response. You're embarrassed for us. And it's infuriating."

Andrew Sullivan http://www.andrewsullivan.com/ agrees, complaining about "the equation of gayness with some sort of embarrassing problem or, worse, some kind of affliction. For people who believe this, of course Kerry was out of line. That's why Rove's base is so outraged. But if you don't believe this, it's no different than, say, if a candidate were to mention another candidate's son in the Marines. Or if, in a debate on immigration, a pro-immigrant candidate mentioned Kerry's immigrant wife.

"You have to regard homosexuality as immoral or wrong or shameful to even get to the beginning of the case against Kerry. That's why it's a Rorschach test. Secondly, Mary Cheney isn't private. She ran gay outreach for Coors, for pete's sake. She appears in public with her partner. Her family acknowledges this. She's running her dad's campaign! Whatever else this has to do with - and essentially, it has to do whether you approve of homosexuality or not - privacy is irrelevant.

1. Yet Another Fucking Thread On This. What IS THE PROBLEM
jesus christ... I can't believe so many DU'ers have such screwed up priorities.

The GOP dangles a shiney lesbian object and every fucking time I log on DU'ers are posting MORE THREADS ABOUT THIS!

Roves testifes to a grand jury
Iraq troops mutiny

But by god... DU has thread after thread about a non-story.

8. That's right. You have no answer, so go for the personal attack
I noticed that instead of explaining why it takes dozens of threads to say the same thing over and over, you chose to post something with nothing but a personal attack.

11. what in the hell are you talking about?
I didn't attack - I defended. Read closely. I believe it's quite alright to have multiple posts on a topic because some people only get a few minutes to check in, interact and post.

Anyway, we ARE all on the same side you know.

13. "Suck it up, missy"
Name calling is not defensive. It's offensive. By definition.

15. it's an expression
not a name. It means, get over it. Among total strangers it's mildly rude. Among friends and co-posters here it's just an expression. I like cryingshame btw; so :pals:, okay?

I guess it's not offensive.

2. "first we have breaking news, ....
"...Karl Rove just finished testifying about the Valerie Plame outing...."

That's how Terry McAuliffe responded on CNN. THAT's how you respond to questions about Mary Cheney. You go on the offense.

19. i just heard that Rove spent 2 hours being questioned.
But the Chimphaus is refering reporters with questions to the Justice Dept.
I wonder what the next event will be.

I care about the Valeria Plame issue too. There just is not much traction about it yet.
You can't believe it will be dropped though. And for that matter the CIA is very interested in finding the culpret as well, I am sure.

3. This is exactly true.
I'm gay. I was talking to a rightist "gay-supportive" co-worker yesterday. She said, but what if Kerry's daughter were a DRUG ADDICT and Bush was referencing that. Quickly, she realized her "gaffe" and self-corrected. But the line of thinking is clear. This is a "deep, dark secret" type of "family affair." In reality it's, of course, WHO SHE IS.

It cannot be otherwise. Mary Cheney wears a ring on her finger representing her marriage, to someone who happens to be female. That's an important part of her. I wish luck, honestly, to those who want the GOP to get over its anti-gay attitudes. But ducking the issue isn't going to get that done.

7. this is about hypocracy. The Chimp Admin wants a Constitutional Amendment
to ban gay marriage and I honestly think that there is some secret shame about having to acknoledge that Mary Cheney, ( the lesbian daughter ), has other than mainstream Republican gender preferences.

If the Cheney's are going to be backing the Republican agendas, then I believe this is fair game.

9. I can't figure out
...if Sullivan is really tilting towards Kerry, or if he's suddenly going to declare himself for Bush a week before the election.

Be wary.

12. I'm with you, David.
The ever-moral Captain Bareback is not to be trusted. I would like to, but I would also like to be 6'4" tall, handsome, independently wealthy and well-hung. I don't think I will be doing any of those, either. ;-)

17. My question to repubs: HOW could cheney have a gay daughter??
What kind of parents were they? Why don't they put her in one of those programs and have her "fixed"?

That's a conversation stopper!
