I picked this issue knowing my letter has a better chance of being printed if it is tied to a story in the paper. Today's Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel has an article about the Cheneys and their "outrage."
This is the letter I'm sending to the paper. Feedback please.
"In regard to the October 15 article “Cheneys upset with remark on lesbian child,” I find their outrage to be more than hypocritical considering what has been said in the past. Indeed, Alan Keyes, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Illinois, said in an interview with satellite radio station OutQ, that Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary was a "selfish hedonist" for being a lesbian. Where was the outrage then? Surely the Senator’s comment that we are all God’s children and that Mary is “being who she was born as” doesn’t even compare. In fact, I welcome his comments as a needed counterpoint to Alan Keyes’ words.
I say if Dick Cheney and Alan Keyes, and indeed John Edwards, can bring up Mary Cheney and her sexuality without reprocussion, then it appears that the fervor over Sen. Kerry’s supportive words is nothing but political posturing by the Bush campaign, meant to be a distraction from the real issues at hand and as a momentum killer for the Senator.
Perhaps Sen. Kerry didn’t need to use Mary Cheney specifically as an example. I suspect he did so to point out the hypocrisy of the Bush campaign in using Ms. Cheney’s talents in the campaign, and her name on the trail, but not supporting gays and lesbians where it counts most. Sen. Kerry understands the needs and rights of the LGBT community, and the president does not. Pointing this out to the American people was certainly “within bounds” this election year."
Well?
