How come no one's blaming Bush for the price of gas?
Maybe there are just too many other issues right now. But the price of gas affects what we pay for EVERYTHING. Been to the supermarket lately? What can Bush do?

1. Open the national gas reserves. This has brought down prices under other presidents.

2. Use the "bully pulpit" of the presidency to "bargain" with oil-producing countries.

3. Talk to his Saudi pals who have the largest oil reserves in the world. Oh, sorry, I forgot that these are people who contribute millions to keep him in power.

The most disgusting thing about our gas prices is that Bush and Cheney are PERSONALLY profiting. Bush through poppy's Carlyle Group and Cheney through his "deferred" Halliburton stock options. Didn't stuff like this used to be called treason?

1. I'd disagree with #1.
That's not the purpose of the national reserve. Using national reserves to manipulate pricing is a poor idea, IMHO.

5. It's still not a valid use of the strategic reserve.
It only results in short-term reductions and doesn't address the underlying causes.

4. Second, the SPR is not an effective price control
Short-term fixes to long term problems usually only make the long-term problems worse.

7. That's great. But where the hell is the rest of the country on this issue?
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 10:25 AM by Cyrano
I guess I've reached the point where, If people are this brain dead about how they're being screwed, the hell with them.

If Bush wins/steals it again, I for one am going to Canada and buying a new bicycle/dog sled.

8. Good question...part of larger issue that has me deflated this a.m.
I'm checking my Yahoo News this morning...the lead items:

• U.S. airstrikes hit Iraq insurgent stronghold
• Zimbabwe's Tsvangirai acquitted of treason
• Poll: Bush opens four-point lead on Kerry
• FDA orders strong antidepressant warnings
• Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins
• Future of programmers in U.S. uncertain
• Norwegian police ID 'Scream' theft suspects

What about gas prices? What about the demolition of SBVT on Nightline yesterday? What about nearing losing 20 US soldiers in the last 4 days? How many Iraqis have died during the increasing bombings recently?

DemStrategist was right...there are a dozen important stories that should be front and center if mainstream journalists were doing their jobs.

I know we don't need one more list of outstanding issues posted here, but there are so many issues out there that we lose track of the ones older than a week ago, and the press either does not focus on them in the first place or let's them disappear. So, with apologies for my indulgence in hope that will make me feel better, I list some of the issues that we should be hearing more about but are not getting any traction:

Gas prices, close to 1100 military dead, tens of thousands of Iraqi dead, job losses, ties to SBVT, AWOL, Plame, Edmonds and FBI mismanagement, demonstrable lying in debates and rallies, decision to go to Iraq, Iraq peace mismanagement, only 10% of Iraq rebuilding money spent, N Korea and Irsrael disengagement for 2 years, 700 million misused for Iraq, underfunding No Child Left Behind, threats to balance of Supreme Court, administration secrecy, August PDB and ignoring warnings by others, Chalabi/Iran, stock market below 10,000, record federal deficit, near record trade deficit, Hersh and CIA bleak outlook on Iraq, discounting of Geneva Conventions, Patriot Act mis use, Abu Ghraib, Energy Task Force, Enron ties, Halliburton, Harken Energy insider trading, head in sand on stem cells, threat to Roe v Wade, horrible environmental record, privatization of retirement savings, health care savings account (ridiculous), Saudi ties, blatant smearing of McCain/Clarke/O'Neill/Wilson.

How could it be any worse? And this is just in 4 years!!! WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE for people and media to wake up?

9. NOTHING bad that happens is EVER Bush*'s fault
Just watch the 'news' and read the "newspapers"

It's all somebody else's fault or beyond fixing. We have a Special Olympics President and we should all just cheer him on and when he doesn't fuck up TOO badly, we should really praise him.

This country longs for a monarchy and we finally have one. and we have an idiot dauphin for king.
