Log Cabin Republican statement on Kerry's Mary lesbian comment
(Washington, DC)—"Senator Kerry could have made his point about gay and lesbian Americans without mentioning the Vice-President's daughter.

However, this shouldn't distract us from the fact that President Bush, Karl Rove and other Republicans have been using gay and lesbian families as a political wedge issue in this campaign.

Log Cabin Republicans have a message for both campaigns. For Senator Kerry and Senator Edwards, you do not need to talk about the Vice President's daughter in order to discuss your positions on gay and lesbian issues. For President Bush and Karl Rove, you have a moral obligation to stop using gay and lesbian families as a political wedge issue. Our country and our party deserve better."

1. I believe that was part of the reason he did bring up Cheney's daughter
"the fact that President Bush, Karl Rove and other Republicans have been using gay and lesbian families as a political wedge issue in this campaign. "

right, that's a big part of why he brought her up.

4. It's amazing how people will knowingly vote against their interests.

9. Slaves for the Confederacy, I guess
If they fancy that they're actually working for equal rights for gays and lesbians from within the belly of the beast, they ought to give a thought or two to the other minorities who are also targets of the Repukes. Selfish hedonists!

3. I would agree if Mary wasn't
campaigning with the Bush team has the openly gay daughter of the VP. It's okay when they talk about her has their token lesbian, but it's not okay for anyone else to talk about it? Sorry, then she should go back to private life.

5. and mostly because THEY brought up the Consitutional Amendment
they brought up the anti gay amendment to the consitution. they want to get support from the anti gay crowd by doing hateful things like that. but they don't like it pointed out that what they claim is so bad goes on in their own family.

7. Yeah, she put herself into the debate
My sister was furious over the "Dear Mary" letter campaign, and I pointed out that during the 2000 election she said that she would act as the GLBT liaison with the administration and that in 2004 she's getting six figures to work on their campaign staff.

If she doesn't want to get discussed by the candidates, she should be handling the campaign the way most children of politicians do: voting for her father but not campaigning for him. She can't leap into and out of the political arena as she chooses.

Of course, I haven't heard that Mary is protesting her being spoken about, but the same goes for her family. If you're gonna pay her big bucks to be on your campaign staff, that means she is fair game in debates. Period.

8. For the life of me I cannot see that this would hurt us with the
gay community. It just gives the totally hypocritcal republicans something to scream about and that just plays to their base (big deal). It's biggest problem is taking the focus off of what was said in that debate. So everyone would just shut up about it. In fact, today I see the news has super great clips of Kerry's remarks at AARP convention.
