McCain wouldn't have been an alternative. They had to have someone who didn't think for himself, and was very easily manipulated.

Rove, Hughes, and some bald guy form what is called an "Iron Triangle" way back from Texas. They are the ones that were able to smear Ann Richards and defeat her. Same thing again with McCain and his "black baby". So what you are suggesting is highly unlikely....
