I, John Kerry, apologize to Dick and Lynne Cheney
for caring more about their daughter Mary's civil rights than they do. Perhaps, I over reached in stating I cared about her civil rights. I care more about her right to EXIST than they do. No, wait, I care more about Mary Cheney's civil rights than I care about dividing up the nation and garnering votes from people who would practice bigotry, hate and discrimination, all in the name of Jesus Christ, and I care more about it than Dick and Lynne Cheney do.

Look, folks, I don't have a gay daughter, but if I did...I would NEVER support a constitutional amendment to limit her rights thereby relegating her to second class citizenship and I would deck anybody who tried to because my family means more to me than some political ploy.

I, furthermore, apologize to Mary Cheney for caring more about her rights than even SHE does. Apparently, her father's power and the enrichment of his war profiteer buddies means more to her than her own right to exist in this nation...that much is a choice...her sexuality isn't.

In fact, I apologize to Dick, Lynne and Mary Cheney for caring more about their family than I do any of Karl Rove's tricks to further divide America.

I'm John Kerry and I approve of Mary Cheney's right to exist...now that I have granted her the very beingness that is incumbent in the right to exist...maybe she can help her folks get the hell out of John Edwards' house so we can get down to the HARD WORK of getting this nation back on track.

1. Yeah. The thing that gets me about lizard-hearted Cheney
is that if his daughter *wasn't* gay he would be
for that Amendment without blinking his lizard
eyelids. He's a real Buddha.

6. Let's not dare mention
shrub's failure to continue hunting UBL and lying during the debates about his statement. It's more important to attack Kerry for sticking up for Mary Cheney, which is more than her parents are willing to do.

I am waiting for the day she writes a book.

7. Yesterday, I listened to Imus for a few minutes, and he repeatedly said

Cheney is "a pork chop-sucking war criminal." Kind of poetic, huh?

9. If Kerry apologized it would be an insult to every gay person
in the world.

He should just say that and leave it at that.

12. Well said. I can't believe the shit that's going on on DU.
You don't "OMG He said gay!" when it's YOUR GUY, and he's making a GOOD POINT.

Would his words ever be on a written speech? Of course not, but Jesus Christ, people, get a grip. You've been too fucking pampered by Kerry's effectiveness in these debates that his one Goddamn awkward statement is going to keep replaying in your heads all day.

It's Cheney's wife and Republicans who should be ashamed of themselves for turning on their own families. It's homophobic Americans who should know what time it is.

Anybody on DU can make the most outrageous claims against Cheney's conflicts of interest with Halliburton or any other evil multinational corporation and everybody eats it up. But show Republican hypocrisy and it's distasteful.

Spin this, it's the only question Dems need to ask:

Why would you think Kerry's invoking of Cheney's gay daughter is in any way insulting?

Figure it out for yourselves, then ask that of those who continue to believe that Kerry slandered Cheney's good name.

Then let me know if you come up with a good reason why Cheney's family discord over a moral issue shouldn't be on people's minds going into November.

And for fuck's sake, don't voice critiques of your guy if you still want him to win. Sowing dissent and dividing those opposed to them is how the enemy works, and how they get the most joy.

10. I didn't like Kerry's
remark. I'm sorry he made it. It sounded and felt smarmy to me. I like Kerry a lot. I'm proud he's the standard bearer for my party, but I'm not proud of that particular moment.

11. Let's ask Fred Phelps who he's voting for...

...one would assume he's voting for the guy who pushed the FMA into congress (that would be Mary's Dad's "boss...").

13. If Mary had juvenile diabetes
Nobody would be insulted that Kerry brought it up.

If they were discussing stem cell research, and Kerry said "this is the best chance for the Vice President's own daughter to have a better life, but he refuses to endorse it," we wouldn't be hearing these complaints.

If you view her sexual orientation as an insult, you'll be offended by Kerry's remark.

If you view her orientation as a part of the natural circumstances of her life that's not open to judgment calls, you won't be anymore insulted than in the above scenario.

19. I'm not insulted by Kerry. I'm insulted by the Cheneys and their
hunger for power which seems to be more potent than their desire for their daughter to be treated as having been created equal per the US consititution. I thought my post demonstrated that (guess I missed the mark somewhere)

How is that any different from the repugs that called it a mental illness before the 80's?

15. Make it shorter and address it to Mary Cheney--not D&L
"Looking back on last night's debate I recognize that there was no need to mention you by name. That was clumsy of me and I apologize. I understand that, in addition to defining and defending the rights of Gay and lesbian citizens, we must also respect their personal dignity. Along with many other Americans, I am learning how to do that While we may stumble in this process, I am committed to addressing these issues with candor and respect."

25. That is it exactly.. Kerry's remarks flew right over their heads
They only know hatred so when Kerry brought it up they automatically assumed it was pointed at Dick Cheney in a hateful way because it is what they would have done had the roles been reversed. Kerry was being a sentient and kind man and they just missed it completely.

17. Keep talking America, everybody needs to hear about cheney's gay daughter
all this "controversy" does is keeps the issue alive so even more people hear about it. Kerry's got nothing to be ashamed of, but obviously the cheney's do.
