11. not a mistake at all. Kerry is a diplomat and showed GOP are humans too
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:22 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
It was a great punch- almost below the belt but definitely above board. And he showed his diplomacy again with the "admiring Bush for bringing the country together post 9/11" mention.

Kerry was right on with mentioning Cheney's daughter.

4. They sure are ashamed of her, aren't they?
Kerry upheld her as a model for respect, and the Republicans are going ballistic claiming he "attacked" her. It's obvious THEY have some problem with her being lesbian.

6. Obviously
you can't say someone is gay on tv unless you are condemning them, and since Kerry didn't condemn M. Cheney he shouldn't have said she was gay.

8. Yes, It's their problem.
It's okay for Mommie Dearest and Sneer Dear to use her when it's convenient. Now they're offended by anyone else mentioning it?

Lynne to Dick: "Let's trot her out honey - this crowd's a teeny bit liberal". :puke:

18. And that is exactly why Kerry used the word "lesbian"
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:31 PM by mitchum
He did not create, or play to, their bigotry. But if their bigotry exists (and they are not going to change), why not turn it against their own vehicle.
Tactically brilliant

7. Daddy's little secret?
Ron Reagan made good point about the hypocrisy this shows in the administration. Will be water under the bridge tomorrow. The Bushies won't touch that one.

10. Why are they offended?
I don't get this. The daughter is out, right? Cheney and his wife talk about her themselves, right?

For the pundits to act like there is something wrong with Kerry mentioning it gives the impression that they think it's something that might embarass Cheney.

This really bugs me. I am ecstatic that both Edwards and Kerry mentioned Cheney's daughter in the positive and inclusive way they did. You absolutely cannot discuss the issue of equal rights for gay people without acknowledging that we are talking about people we love. This is about how we are going to treat not strangers, but our daughters, our brothers, our friends, our neighbors. There can be no double standard, and Kerry and Edwards are taking the double standard away.

It offends me for the pundits to cluck and shush. They should be talking about the irony of Cheney supporting Bush's bigoted position and disrespecting his own daughter.

14. They are taking offense at the word, "Lesbian"
The people in this country are so fucking retarded. If Kerry had called her "Gay" -- no problem. If he said, "homosexual" still ok. If he said, "alternative lifestyle choice" still no biggie.

But the word Lesbian conjurs up images of what these guys watch on their computers when they get home. It's dirty, kinky, raunchy. It's because Republican men are sick, repressed porn addicts and they don't want to attribute Mary Cheney with the nasty stuff they whack to every night.

17. It's called hardball - and I'm THRILLED the Dems are playing it
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:31 PM by secular_warrior
Kerr and Edwards bringing this issue up the way they did was a MASTERSTROKE.

Some folks were angry about Edwards bringing up Cheney's daughter, and there are undoubtedly some who are upset about Kerry doing it tonight. I know people personally who were upset about it.

Guess what ? It's not going to lose KE any votes. If anything it will probably help with social conservatives in places like Ohio who will see Bush for what he is - a divisive, hypocrite. This and Bush's very wishy washy answer on immigration is sure to hurt him with social conservatives, who may just say to themselves "Kerry and Bush and all politicians are bad on social issues - lets think about Iraq and the economy." It is designed to hurt Bush with social conservatives and get them looking to other issues.

This a hardball, folks. It's something the Dems haven't done in a long, long time. Hitting nerves and ticking a few people off are what it takes to win the big one.

ps. I don't think Kerry and Edwards offend gay people, who will probably like the fact that they exposed the Republican hypocrisy.

20. There's another thing
Not only will some see him as a hypocrite, but some social conservatives will hear of the "sinners" in the administration's families and may be turned off by them.

Is it playing into the hands of bigots? Yeah to some extent, but these people wouldn't vote for Kerry anyways. It's unlikely that gays will be really offended by Kerry's comments, because they'll realize how bigoted republicans really are in that they can't admit that they too have gays in the family.
