Brent Scowcroft on Making Terrorism a 'Nuisance'
For Immediate Release
October 11, 2004

THEY SAID IT: SCOWCROFT ON MAKING TERRORISM A NUISANCE

Gen. Brent Scowcroft (ret.): "Can we win the war on terrorism? Yes, I
think we can, in the sense that we can win the war on crime. There is
going to be no peace treaty on the battleship Missouri in the war on
terrorism, but we can break its back so that it is a horrible nuisance
and not a paralyzing influence on our societies." Peace, CONFERENCE ON AMERICA'S CHALLENGES IN A CHANGED WORLD, 9/5/02]

General Scowcroft served as the National Security Advisor to both
Presidents Ford and the first President Bush. Born in Utah, he graduated
from West Point and served in the Air Force in a number of capacities
including Assistant Air Attache in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Special
Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Military
Assistant to President Nixon. From 1978 to 1987, General Scowcroft
remained actively engaged in national security affairs, serving on the
President's Advisory Committee on Arms Control, the Commission on
Strategic Forces and the President's Special Review Board, also known as
the Tower Board. He earned a Doctorate in International Relations from
Columbia University.

Either that or pointing out that Kerry didn't say "horrible nuisance." OMG! He doesn't understand terrorism is horrible!!!

4. But, if you ignore Iraq who we invaded, isn't it really
more of a nuisance than a war already? Logistically, although its not impossible for al Qaeda to launch attacks as they have proved, they are definitely limited.

7. Just keep quoting *
"I don't think you can WIN the war on terrorism" then "We WILL win the war on terrorism".

8. What Kerry actually said is that (to paraphrase)
we need to get to a point where 'terrorism' isn't this all-consuming trope in our lives but is thought of more as a nuisance.

Of course, how we'll get there without peace and justice between the Israelis and Palestinians is anyone's guess. As long as we have a land-locked aircraft carrier in the Middle East that we support to the tune of $5 billion a year with no justice for the Palestinians, I'd say it will be a long time before 'terrorism' retreats to being simply a nuisance.

9. This whole issue works for us because
it highlights the basic divide between Bush and Kerry:

Bush is for Endless War, Kerry is for solving problems

10. CNN said bush* changed his stump speech today to capitalize
on the perceived Kerry faux paux. Truth is bush* will just be that less prepared come Wednesday night. Burnt toast.
