And given how Americans are living longer and longer, it doesn't look like this trend will drop-off at any time soon.
Assuming that a mere two justices retire in the next four years, we'd be looking at an average of 36 years of voting on the land's highest court. Add Kerry's 4 year term, and we're looking at a vote that, in reality, will determine 40 years of decision-making.
The Supreme Court will decide questions on the environment, corporate malfeasance, trade policy, human rights, gay rights, women's rights, checks and balances, education, workers' rights, handicapped rights, the death penalty, privacy rights, etc etc etc. If anything is remotely controversial, an attempt will be made to bring that issue before the Supreme Court. Given how weak the checks on this branch of govt are, it'd be nice to have the ultimate trump card on our side.. a liberal bench.
