Marines Quiet About Brutal New Weapon
Not to fuel any fires or anything, but I thought this new ordinance was quite interesting with regards to the WTC et al (saw it on gizmodo).

Anyone have any thoughts?

2. I really have no clue
I had just never heard of a type of weapon like a thermobaric bomb before. I guess I could imagine lots of "crackpot" theories of this being the choice for the bombs that were wired up to the wtc and the like, but I don't want to necessarily go there - I was really just curious what anyone else thought about it.

3. Jim Hoffman has a short comment on thermobaric weapons
A 'thermobaric' is a weapon that first disperses an aerosol mixture with
a primary charge, and then ignites it with a secondary charge, causing a
massive fireball and overpressures....

One can imagine a scenario in which a thermobaric device was installed
at each floor in the service core of each tower. Upon command, the
devices would trigger a primary charge, dispersing the aerosol
throughout their floors, and then, 10 seconds later, would trigger a
secondary charge, causing an explosion with overpressures sufficient to
shatter the perimeter walls.

Wikipedia has a helpful article too:

5. well,
It seems an unlikely candidate.

Pressure doesn't do much to steel. Except throw it through the air in a degree that certainly didn't happen on 9/11. Where would all that pressure go?

Charges to bring down a building like that would cut the steel, with the least possible pressure, using probably thermite or similar or maybe shaped charges, as well as I don't frankly have good idea. This weapon is not a fuel air explosive, it is a slow-cook spiced high explosive that is designed to shake walls.

It does not to the same extent have the same problems that the russian Fuel air explosive version has, that is a proportionately very large area being affected by a lethal and a larger one by very unhealthy pressure wave, taking people's ear drums away and giving diverse internal damage that is very hard and resource intencive both to treat and to diagnose in a wartime hospital facility. The russian weapon is way to big for urban environments still containing civilians.

This weapon represent not either much of an improvement or worsening of the effect of this war on the civilian population in Iraq, as did phosphor rounds save the terror effect. A failed or purposefully failed strategy for winning the wars for water, electricity and real democracy is the culprit, a military and particularly a largely mercenary force facing a guerilla or partisan attacks will have to win the populations support early, or the demoralisation will necessarily mean a violence spiral where the civilians will get to take the place of the real enemy, it is an old, old routine.
