Bush and Atta Visit Same Resort in the Hours Leading to 9-11

Just three nights before President George W Bush arrived at the swank Colony Resort on Longboat Key on the evening of Sept 10, 2001, Mohamed Atta was staying at a slightly-less tony hotel just two miles down the beach, the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites—Longboat Key, according to eyewitnesses who contacted the FBI in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Predictably, the story went nowhere. So too did early wire reports stating that on the day of the attack Sarasota police said the Secret Service interrogated four Sudanese men after getting a tip that the men intended to harm President Bush during his visit to the city.

The incident was found to be "unrelated" to the attacks, the AP reported, and ended in the release of the men. But these stories are now being resurrected in the wake of recent reports of a possible Longboat Key assassination attempt against Bush on the morning of the terrorist attack, and they are provoking disturbing questions about how much, or how little, Americans have been told about the events surrounding the attack on their country.

1. Misleading thread title?

Clearly, they did not visit the "same" resort, if you're referring to the hotels in question. And Longboat Key isn't really a resort, as there are public beaches there as well.

2. Intriguing.

An assassination attempt against Il Deuce wouldn't square with theories that Bush helped plan or carry out the Attack on America (MIHOP), or that he just left the barn doors open for terrorists, then sat on his butt reading a story about a pet goat while they did their dirty work (LIHOP). UNLESS...

Was 9/11 a Republican plot that got out of hand? They thought they could cleverly maneuver some Islamic terrorist into attacking assigned targets, but the terrorists had their own ideas and tried to take out Bush, too?

Imagine if the terrorists had took out Bush but left the World Trade Center and Pentagon alone. Boy would this country be in big trouble!

3. "The Players got Played"?

I lean that way to....it's like they knew something was going to happen, maybe a lot of details on the "event". And they thought they could stage manage it to their political advantage for pushing their ME oil agenda.

But it appears that they were fed bad intel. Maybe they were expecting a "made for TV" hijacking, but the AQ had apparently had other plans. Certainly, our lack of AF coverage (oh yeah, the radar was pointing the wrong way) facilitated the play out of a drama on TV.

It seems like they did their damndest to keep information from getting into the WH through normal channels. But I'm just as sure that Poopy still had his CIA org keeping him in the loop. Did they have, what they thought, was the inside scoop?

Poppy spending the night at the WH while Jr. is in Florida is another odd coincidence I think. And I wonder what was being discussed at that meeting with his partners, the bin Ladens, at their Carlyle annual meeting that morning? I also wonder what that double dealing ISI general from Pakistan had to say to Goss and Graham on that morning as well....

Regarding the possibility of this being a Republican plot that got out of hand, think about number of bizarre plans they've gotten off the ground but which have later proven to be frauds of almost unimaginable proportion (the tax cut, for starters).

I imagine there are tons of examples and other posters will probably come up with ones that are even better than mine, but here's another:

The idea that you could actually start and execute a war based on no intelligence. They actually did it--they got the Senate and the House to go ahead and agree to fight a multi-billion dollar war that has killed God only knows how many of our soldiers and that is financially devastating this country. You had the "president" of the United States actually using stories that had been proven to be false, like the yellowcake Niger story.

I mean, really, it's so bizarre and outlandish to think that anyone would even try this, much less get away with it. But they did it. So why would it be bizarre to think that these fools would draw the line with working out an attack plan with a group of terrorists?

I think it's just so shocking and unreal to have these totally dangerous, deranged people running our affairs that ordinary people and even journalists are just grasping onto whatever semblance they can concoct of a reality. When I see commentators actually discussing bush like he's a real president with a real foreign policy (like a Clinton, for example), it just makes me want to slap them and say, "Wake up! Can't you put two and two together?!"
