Behold My Hands: Evidence for

Christ's Visit in Ancient America

by Steven E. Jones

The Book of Mormon makes the bold statement that Jesus Christ, shortly following His resurrection, visited people in the New World and invited them to "feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am...the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world. ... Ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice..." (3 Nephi 11:14, 15:21). The Bible states that Jesus "showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days" and that this witness of Christ would be "unto the uttermost part of the earth." (Acts 1:3-8) and that Jesus would indeed visit "other sheep" (John 10:16).

Several years ago, an idea popped into my head: Would people in the New World who also saw Jesus Christ leave memorials of this supernal experience by showing marked hands of Deity in their artwork? So I began a search with the following hypothesis-to be tested: Ancient artwork portraying a deity with deliberate markings on his hands will be found somewhere in the Americas. A crazy idea, maybe - but wait till you see the artwork of the ancient Maya!

Ideas do seem to pop into Prof. Jones' head, don't they?

2. So you think that all Mormons are crazy buggers?
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 09:41 PM by mhatrw
And no believing Mormon can be a legitimate scientist?

Or do you have another point?

3. I think the point is ...
he has a track record of abandoning fundamental scientific principles and logic to matters of faith. His work on 911 has more in common with his paper on Jesus than real science.

5. My point is that any believing Mormon adheres to a myriad of
beliefs that make Jesus visiting native Americans seem tame.

Does that make them all nuts? Does that disqualify any believing Mormon from legitimate scientific inquiry?

7. I don't think he is nuts ...
he just can't seperate science and faith.

8. Scientific inquiry is an exacting thing, but not impossible to carry out.
Part of its rigor is its simplicity to understand. People can recognize when they are doing science and when they are not.

Specialization (and authority to speak in said specialization) is an important part of how we have acquired so much scientific information. Experts in a field should know when they are speaking to their field and when they are not, and give careful indication to each state in their reports.

How does Steven Jones indicate that he is speaking outside of his field in this paper? Please remember that in the paragraph I quoted, Steven Jones is speaking in a little Christian/Mormon slang.

"An idea came to his head..."

Is Steven Jones claiming a little inspiration here? In Steven Jones' religion, who is the Giver of Ideas?

Is Steven Jones claiming inspiration from God here to cover his otherwise lack of expertise in this field of science?

6. I have one question about Mormons: Are they humans like the rest of us?
Yes, of course they are.

I myself don't need to know a single thing more about them. There's no possible way they could be any worse than that.

I forget who said that much better before me, but I'm sure one of you kind souls will let me know.

I view Mormons the same as I do any other religion, from the cave bear to Scientology: just another trumped-up excuse to secure the best part of the barbeque from the community hunt. The incidents of the Mormon faith are no more abhorrent in my eye than that of the Bird-Man cult of Rapa Nui, the Aten of Egypt, or the millenial reign of Jesus from Jerusalem.

They are equally abhorrent.

9. It's true that that is central to the Mormon faith, but
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 10:19 PM by greyl
recent evidence has shown conclusively that that particular Mormon dogma is not true.
That doesn't mean that all Mormons are crazy buggers. It means something else.

Back to what it means about Jones, you may draw your own conclusions about his lack of motivation for seeing truths that are inconvenient to his faith. Even disregarding the hard scientific evidence that refutes his Christ's Visit paper, just read his paper carefully and notice his leaps of faith and unwarrented conclusions.

Does the fact that Limbaugh is a raving nut mean that all dittoheads are crazy buggers? Hmmm.

edit: an older S/11 forum thread about this: Dr Steven E. Jones "Christ visited ancient America"

How many of us have seen the relevant South Park episode?
