Americans Raise $14 Million to Aid Uprooted Gaza Settlers
New York Times
By GREG MYRE
August 12, 2005

A consortium of wealthy Americans has put up $14 million to compensate Jewish settlers for their Gaza Strip greenhouses, and the facilities will be handed over to the Palestinians as soon as the Israelis leave, participants in the agreement said today.

The deal, coming just days before Israel is to begin evacuating settlers from Gaza, is intended keep intact valuable agricultural properties for Palestinian use.

While Palestinians are eager to see the Israeli settlers go, the withdrawal could leave the new tenants in even more dire economic straits, at least in the short term.

About 3,500 Palestinians have worked in the greenhouses as employees of the Israeli settlers, and would lose their jobs if the greenhouses are torn down. In addition, the Erez industrial zone, on Gaza's northern border with Israel, has been either closed or limping along at partial capacity for the past couple of years. It is not clear whether thousands of Palestinians will be able to continue working at factories there following the Israeli pullout.

6. I guess so the Palestinians can rebuild whatever they want
In a deal reached between Israel and the Palestinians, Israel will destroy most of the structures in Gaza and northern Samaria after all residents have been removed. Under the supervision of the World Bank, Palestinian and Egyptian contractors will clear the rubble, which will include 26 synagogues.
