<snip>

"Palestinians armed with rifles and grenades attacked Israeli soldiers doing construction work near the Gaza border with Egypt, killing one soldier and wounding two others, the army said. One of the Palestinians was also killed in the attack.

It was the second major assault on Israeli targets in Gaza in recent days and defied a shaky four-month truce between Israel and the Palestinians.

The flare-up in violence came as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrapped up a two-day visit to the region intended to spur Palestinians and Israelis to work together to ensure that Israel's planned pullout from Gaza this summer proceeds peacefully.

The violence began Sunday morning when a group of guerrillas fired an anti-tank missile and a hail of bullets at a military post along the Gaza-Egypt border to create a distraction, the army said. At the same time, other Palestinians attacked a nearby group of military engineers working on construction along the border, killing one soldier and wounding two others, the army said."

Israeli killed, youth hurt in West Bank terror ambush

Palestinian gunmen near the northern West Bank city of Tul Karm opened fire on a car carrying two Israelis in a drive-by ambush early Monday, killing the 35-year-old driver and lightly wounding his passenger, 15.

The militants fired from a passing car point near homes in the village of Baka al-Sharkiyeh, a few hundred meters from the Green Line border of the West Bank. The victims' car was driving from the nearby settlement of Hermesh.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack which came a day before Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas were to hold a summit viewed as key to coordinating the planned disengagement.

Paramedics rushed the wounded passenger to Hillel Yaffe hospital in Hadera.

It was the first shooting incident in the area in some time, but the area has long been a hotbed of militant activity, especially of the Islamic Jihad, which has carried out the lion's share of terror attacks in recent months
