Hamas rejects late PLC elections
Hamas on Thursday warned the Palestinian Authority against postponing legislative elections slated for July and said such a move would serve only the interests of the ruling Fatah party.

The warning came following statements made by Tayeb Abdel Rahim, a senior aide to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, to the effect that the PA was seriously considering delaying the elections.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar said his movement was recently approached by Abbas with an offer to postpone the election until the end of the year. In return, Hamas members would be appointed to positions in a national unity cabinet. He said Hamas rejected the offer./b]

In recent months, Hamas has participated in three rounds of municipal voting, posing a strong challenge to Fatah.

In local elections last week, Fatah won in a majority of 83 towns and villages. However, Hamas won the four biggest races, in the towns of Rafah, Beit Lahiya, al-Bureij and Kalkilya.
