Bomb Blast Wounds Israeli Soldier Despite Truce
- Palestinian militants set off a bomb near an Israeli army jeep in Gaza on Thursday, wounding a soldier and jarring a ceasefire that has helped smooth the way toward a planned Israeli pullout from the territory this summer.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon vowed to keep as many settlements in the larger West Bank as possible after quitting Gaza and shrugged off U.S. objections to more building in the enclaves that Palestinians call an obstacle to peace.

The Israeli army and Palestinian witnesses said the bomb blew up near the Karni crossing on the fenced border between Israel and Gaza. Witnesses said soldiers responded by firing into a nearby Gaza City district.

"An Israeli soldier was moderately wounded as a result of an explosive device activated by Palestinians against an army force patrolling along the security fence near the Karni Crossing," a army statement said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

1. Hudna
It's never really been a truce, it's a "hudna". The use of the word "truce" is for western ears.
A hudna, is an internal truce. The various factions pledge not to attack each other. Traditionally it was designed for a rest period and time for re-arming.

At best, it's merely a temporary truce, with a liniting time frame.

2. You are partially correct...
in that many of the Arab militant groups unilaterally agreed to a truce. Israel has stated plainly that it does not intend to observe this truce.

3. funny thing about Truces, they're easily broken
During the last cease fire, there were only 30 attacks on Israel, I guess that's progress, considering there have been no fewer than 30,000 attacks on Israel in the last 4.5 years of bloody intifada.
They really do hate it when the Jews shoot back.
But seriously, Israel hasn't attacked Hamas since the declared "hudna".
At any rate, Hamas made clear their intentions and have promised a full scale war for Jerusalem. So, hudna doesn't have anything to do with peace, it's just a "time out".

4. especially when they are not observed...
Don't know why the focus is on Hamas, but here is an example of a truce violation: Israel Violates Truce, Kills Three Palestinians

These guys are not "Hamas", but that wasn't the topic. The topic is truce violations, period.

5. Conflicting stories
" Israel Violates Truce, Kills Three Palestinians"

Hamas offered 5 palestinians $380 (some sources say $348- must be the exchange rate causing problems) each for their efforts. This was a effort to derail the talks between Bush and Sharon. Some would have us believe that palestinian "teenagers" are stupid enough to play soccer near a heavily fortified security fence, no-go zone.

7. putting aside...
the poor quality of your argument and dubious (and that's putting it kindly) sourcing...

You realize (possibly not) that you are kvetching about an attack that wounded armed soldiers occupying territory outside of their own country, while justifying the killing of civilian youths engaged in playing soccer on a soccer field in their own territory.

Just to put it in the proper perspective...

Must have been real stupid to put a soccer field near the barrier...oh, wait...the field was there first...hmmm...never mind...

BTW, you might want to review the rules vis-a-vis using Debka as a source for citation.

6. Interesting similar Haaretz story:
IDF soldier moderately hurt in attack near Gaza Strip fence

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was moderately wounded Thursday when his jeep was hit by an explosives device near the Gaza Strip security fence on Thursday.

The device was fired from the Palestinian side of the fence at a jeep patrolling on the Israeli side several dozen meters away.

---

The incident is the second in Gaza this week in which there have been Israeli casualties. On Monday, a soldier was moderately wounded and a civilian lightly hurt by Palestinian sniper fire along the Philadelphi Route on the borer with Egypt.

In the past two weeks there has been a 300 percent increase in the number of violent incidents in the Gaza Strip, including mortar and Qassam rocket fire on Gush Katif and army positions.
